Make the kick the architecture
Choose a kick with a clear attack and a low tail, then leave room around it. Short noise hits, metallic percussion, or a narrow synth can mark the cycle without distracting from the pulse. Keep the pattern legible even when saturation makes the surface rough.
Use breaks as pressure valves
A filter sweep or brief drum cut gives the return more force. A dark pad, shouted phrase, or single-note motif can supply identity between impacts. Hardcore techno works when each layer answers the question of why the next kick needs to hit harder.
