Build the darkness from texture
A sub bass, distorted drum hit, choral pad, guitar fragment, or cold synth can supply the mood. Keep one element dry and close so the rapper remains present against the wider background. A short hook can make the shadowy arrangement memorable.
Use symbols with a point
Gothic imagery has weight when it connects to a real fear, loss, body, city, or relationship. Let the lyric move between direct rap and a sung refrain, then use a breakdown to change the emotional temperature. Dark color should deepen the story, not replace it.
