Indie music: self-directed production and a sound with room to wander
Indie can describe how music is made, released, and controlled, as well as a broad family of alternative sounds. A guitar band, electronic producer, folk singer, or bedroom artist can be indie when the work keeps a distinct creative point of view.

Decide what “indie” means here
If the focus is independent production, let the arrangement show control and experimentation. If the focus is an indie sound, choose the specific lane: jangly guitar, lo-fi folk, synth pop, post-punk, or something else. Avoid using indie as a substitute for a mood with no musical detail.
Protect the odd choice
An unusual lyric image, asymmetrical phrase, dry drum sound, or abrupt structure can give a track its character. Keep one recognizable hook so the listener has a way in, then let the rest of the song follow its own logic. Independence is audible when the decisions feel owned.
