[Intro — spoken, dry, receipt printer clicking] No receipt? Oh. Okay. That’s fine. We’ll reconstruct the entire economic history from witness testimony. Normal Tuesday. [Beat drops] QUEST ACCEPTED. [Verse 1] Excuse me, hi— did I do unpaid labor for you? No pressure. This is not a subpoena. Yet. Did I build something? Fix something? Carry something? Introduce somebody? Save your ass? Did I somehow become the emotional support scaffolding for a project with an actual budget? Great. Write that down. And what would that have cost if you had hired somebody? No, no— don’t say “priceless.” That is not a number. The spreadsheet is becoming hostile. [Pre-Chorus] Hours. Outcome. Replacement cost. Money saved. Money made. Crisis prevented. Crisis inherited. Crisis somehow became my responsibility because I made eye contact. Wonderful. New tab. [Chorus] Reverse the receipt! Baby, follow the trail! Somebody got the value, but somehow I got “You’re amazing” in an email. Reverse the receipt! Open every drawer! Apparently I was doing three job descriptions for exposure— and exposure has terrible benefits. Print it! Stamp it! Put it in the file! If gratitude was currency, I’d have retired for a while. [Verse 2] Next question: What did you actually pay me? Take your time. I can hear the Jeopardy music. Was it money? Lunch? Gas? A tote bag? “A really meaningful opportunity?” Oh my God. Put that in evidence. And now— my favorite: “If you could go back with the money available, what would you have paid?” [Beat cuts] Sir. Why are you sweating? [Pre-Chorus] Maybe the weird part isn’t that nobody paid. Maybe it’s how everybody knew exactly what to ask me for. Anyway— new column: WHY DID THIS BECOME MY PROBLEM? [Chorus] Reverse the receipt! We’re auditing the vibes! Turns out “community” has been doing suspicious things with labor this entire time. Reverse the receipt! Nobody panic yet! We’re just asking why the person creating value was also applying for assistance. Interesting. Very interesting. Could be nothing. Could be a business model. [Bridge — game notification voice] SIDE QUEST UNLOCKED: WRITE THE REFERRAL. Difficulty: Apparently impossible. Objective: Do not write “She is passionate.” I swear to God. Tell them what I did. Tell them what changed. Tell them what I solved. Tell them what I built. Tell them what you’d trust me to do again. Tell them something that does not sound like you met me at summer camp. REWARD: One adult professional reference. RARE DROP: Employment. LEGENDARY DROP: Dental insurance. [Beat comes back harder] [Verse 3] Okay. New pile. Dead links. Old interviews. Missing footage. Accounts behind paywalls. Tech I can’t access. People who were there when the artifact vanished. Funny thing— the work became visible the second somebody else needed it. Huh. Anyway. Keep sorting. Who remembers? Who has a copy? Who can confirm the outcome? Who has the email where everybody accidentally admitted the whole thing depended on me? Perfect. Put it in the binder. [Pre-Chorus] One labeled: EVIDENCE. One labeled: RECEIPTS. One labeled: WHY WAS I DOING THIS FOR FREE? And somewhere around page forty-seven, the plot twist arrives: Maybe I wasn’t bad at creating value. Maybe value was bad at finding its way back. [Chorus] Reverse the receipt! Follow the value home! Find out who got richer, safer, calmer, more organized, more connected, or mysteriously successful after I showed up. Reverse the receipt! Put a dollar beside “thanks!” Let’s see how many times “We couldn’t have done it without you” was immediately followed by absolutely nothing. [Breakdown — spoken, very serious] This is not an invoice. This is research. Which is different. Because research has a clipboard. [Beat] Also— fund the research. [Final Chorus] Fund the quest! Come look at the mess! We’ve got unpaid labor, missing evidence, dead accounts, and witnesses with suspiciously complimentary memories. Fund the quest! I wanna test the machine! Does contribution become income— or does it wander into the forest and come back labeled “character building?” Fund the quest! No predetermined claim! Maybe the data says I exaggerated everything. Great! Science! Maybe the data says I wildly underestimated it. Also great! Slightly more upsetting science! [Outro — receipt printer goes feral] QUEST SUMMARY: Reconstruct contribution. Interview witnesses. Estimate fair value. Collect referrals. Locate missing evidence. Trace where the value went. PRIMARY REWARD: Understanding. SECONDARY REWARD: Opportunity. SECRET ENDING: Someone finally pays for the study about why nobody paid. [Printer stops] … Receipt available upon request.
