[Intro – rhythmic, percussive] (handclaps / stomp feel) Hey! Hey! — run it back again Hey! Hey! — don’t step the line! [Verse 1] We had marbles, shootin’ in a ring Down the hall through tunnels in the rug Loved those little shiny things Boys with the stonkers givin’ us a shove Out of the game but we’d laugh it off Still got a jar full of glass delights Catseyes, agates, swirls so bright Every single one felt gold that night (Hook Tag) Hey! Hey! — don’t step the line! [Verse 2] Mum played knuckles, jacks from bone Five in a row in the sun they’d dry Simple days but we never felt alone Chasin’ small joys money couldn’t buy (Hook Tag) Hey! Hey! — your turn, not mine! [Chorus] Games of our day, we made our own way No screens, just sun in the yard all day Laughin’ out loud, no reason to stay Oh, those were the games of our day Games of our day, still rollin’ the same Through every memory we couldn’t replace Simple and free in every small way Oh, those were the games of our day [Verse 3] Skipping ropes and Mum showed us how Fast then slow with the cross-overs “Cinderella dressed in yellow…” Miss your turn and you start all over Hopscotch chalk on the concrete cracks Flat rock jumpin’, don’t touch the lines Red Rover callin’ your best mate back Hold on tight or you’re breakin’ the line (Hook Tag) Run it back! — one more time! [Verse 4] Branding games — yeah that one stung Tennis balls flyin’, nowhere to hide Duck and dive ‘til the day was done No one played fair but we all still tried Ball on elastic tied to a rock Backyard champs, we were goin’ nonstop Scooter rides and the pogo drops Yo-yo spinnin’ and it just wouldn’t stop (Hook Tag) Last one in — OUT this time! [Verse 5] French elastic, higher each round Singin’ rhymes as we’d jump in time Trip and fall but you don’t stay down Back up laughin’, ready to climb [Bridge – pull back slightly, then build] We’re all still chasin’ that feelin’ now Warm sun days and we don’t know how We let it slip but it’s still inside In scraped up knees and the dirt and pride (build with claps coming back in) We didn’t need much — we had it all Just a backyard and a call… [Final Chorus – BIG, group vocals] Games of our day, we made our own way No screens, just sun in the yard all day Laughin’ out loud, no reason to stay Oh, those were the games of our day Games of our day, they won’t fade away Still live in hearts though the years roll away Simple and free in every small way Oh, those were the games of our day [Outro – chant fade] Hey! Hey! — run it back again Hey! Hey! — don’t step the line Hey! Hey! — just one more round…
