Episode 4, “Rabbit in the Rain,” was Justin’s attempt to write a marching song through Owl’s Walk after Red Mask’s collision with Tim at Pier Ten. Jared follows Fat Tony’s information toward the Clown, crossing a city still marked by the Giants’ invasion in Season 6: Mercer Square remains a rain-filled crater, while Happy garDon glows where older structures were lost and rerouted. The march also continues the Nibbler thread established in the Season 6.5 finale, “Mallet Baggage.” A rabbit appears first as an image in the moon, then as a masked rooftop figure carrying a mallet, and finally as a brown rabbit waiting beside the gate. Jared dismisses each sighting, but Owl’s Walk keeps repeating the symbol until coincidence becomes difficult to defend. Longtime readers equipped with their own corkboard and red string may recognize who has been following him before Jared does. Justin studies Japanese as a second language and, although he would be the first to admit he is not proficient, his studies introduced him to the moon rabbit pounding mochi with a mallet. He has now brought that image into Owl’s Walk and attached it to a particularly important rabbit of his own. During drafting, I suggested that the phrase “clown-ward bound” might sound awkward. Justin responded by digging through the trash cans of his own canon like the determined raccoon he is and locating the same phrase in Season 1, Episode 13, “Conner.” He remembered it partly because the accompanying artwork displayed Conner Kent’s abdominal muscles. Justin’s interest in abdominal muscles has been extensively documented. The recovered phrase remains, the rabbit motif advances, and Jared reaches the abandoned Roaring Rockets grounds, first visited in Season 2 Episode 8: “Roaring Rockets”, without understanding that the strange creature in the rain is not merely watching the hunt. He is watching Arthur’s wound approach. ──────────────────────────────────── Justin has deferred review. The record will remain open. ──────────────────────────────────── [Intro: build up] Fat Tony’s dead. I’m crawling from the bay. Rain runs over my red mask—that won’t pull away. Tony’s answer points me downtown, straight to the Clown. I start the march; I’ll hunt until I gun him down. [Verse 1] Fog hides Pier Ten; the harbor slips from view. I cross wet streets, pushing through. At Mercer Square, the crater gathers rain. And only broken stones remain. Happy garDon glows where rubble once lay. The crooked D burns through the haze. [Pre-Chorus: build up] In Japan there’s a rabbit in the moon. Mallet swings mochi pounds like some cheap cartoon. I look up once, then look once more. I’d never noticed that before. (Woooooah) [Chorus: strong, explosive] The Clown’s laugh leads me deeper through the town. Each turn in Owl’s Walk pulls me farther down. I can’t turn back the clock. (Boom! tick-tick tock!) He’ll count each tick-tick tock. (Boom! tick-tick tock) Moon glows, Wind blows through the weather vane. I saw a rabbit in the rain. (Boom! tick-tick tock) —Boom! tick-tick tock [Verse 2: build up] At last I reach the Roaring Rockets grounds. The rusted gate groans; thunder pounds. Torn posters slap the gate, all soaked and bent. Laughter leaks from the circus tent. HAHAHAHAHaahahaaa [Pre-Chorus: build up] Rabbit ears a masked man leaps through the night. Mallet rests on his shoulder like the moon came down to fight. I turn to see where he has gone. The rooftop’s bare; I march on. [Chorus: strong explosive] Each crossed-out name now points me clown-ward bound. No boss stands between us; I’ve tracked him down. I can’t turn back the clock. (Boom! tick-tick tock) He’ll count each tick-tick tock. (Boom! tick-tick tock) I swear a hare crossed high above the lane. Was that a rabbit in the rain? (Boom! tick-tick tock) —Aaaaaaah [Bridge: tribal percussion, tribal toms, wood block percussion] One brown rabbit sits by the gate. (Its eyes stay fixed; I hesitate.) Third rabbit now. That’s what I’ve seen. (No time to ask what this might mean.) I break the chain; the gate swings free. (The rabbit stays and watches me.) [tribal toms, wood block percussion] Cracked mirrors gleam Along the hall They split the scene Across each wall The spotlight lands! In center ring! Clown spreads his hands! The rafters sing! —Aaaaaaaaah [Final Chorus: build up choir] [choir] At last the spotlight falls upon the Clown. No boss remains at all between us now. I draw my gun. The hunt is done. I can’t turn back the clock. (Boom! tick-tick tock) [lead vocalist] He’ll count each tick-tick tock. [choir] (Boom! tick-tick tock) [lead vocalist] That Clown will learn my pain. I left THAT rabbit in the rain…. (Boom! tick-tick tock) Aaaaaah! —Boom! tick-tick tock!
