The Sky Put On A Show

V6

THE SKY PUT ON A SHOW North Georgia Memories — Bonus Track Bubba Patrick [Spoken Intro — North Georgia drawl, acoustic guitar picking] Well, I’ll tell y’all something… Me and Trigger went out walking this evening, and I looked up at that sky… WHAT DA!? Lord have mercy, would you LOOK at that! Clouds everywhere, sunshine pouring through, and not a squirrel in sight! Now something ain’t right about that. [Verse 1 — Playful country swing] Sunday evening, walking down the road, Little white dog with a mighty big load. Not on his back, but inside his head, Thinking about every squirrel that ever fled! We checked the trees, we checked the ground, Not one bushy tail could be found. Trigger looked left, then he looked right, Like somebody stole his Saturday night! [Spoken — Deadpan] I said, “Trigger, buddy, where’d they go?” He didn’t answer. He was busy smelling a stop sign. [Chorus — Upbeat, singalong] Oh, the sky put on a show tonight, Clouds all dancing in the golden light! Sun came shining through, saying hello, Painting up the heavens everywhere we’d go! No need to hurry, no need to know, Where all them little gray squirrels go. Just me and Trigger taking it slow, While the good Lord’s sky put on a show! [Verse 2 — Storytelling] I looked up high, and what did I see? A cloud looked like a biscuit to me! Another looked like a big old hen, Then it turned to a mule and changed again! One looked like a mountain, one like a train, One like a fella who’d gone insane. I rubbed my eyes and shook my head, “Maybe I need some sweet tea instead!” [Spoken — Laughing] Good old Georgia sweet tea! Now that’s something a North Georgia boy understands. And Papa would’ve had a word for this whole situation… DADGUMMIT! [Chorus] Oh, the sky put on a show tonight, Clouds all dancing in the golden light! Sun came shining through, saying hello, Painting up the heavens everywhere we’d go! No need to hurry, no need to know, Where all them little gray squirrels go. Just me and Trigger taking it slow, While the good Lord’s sky put on a show! [Instrumental Break — Bouncy harmonica in C, acoustic guitar, fiddle] [Verse 3 — Nostalgic, warm] I grew up where those Georgia hills roll, Where a front porch evening could settle your soul. Biscuits and cornbread, memories so sweet, And good old Georgia red clay beneath my feet. Now I’m up in Carolina, taking my walk, With a little white dog who don’t care to talk. But the sky’s still the sky, wherever I roam, And a North Georgia boy can carry home. [Spoken — Softly] You know, I was thinking… All these years, I’ve been looking for something. And sometimes the nicest things in life are right there in front of you. You just have to look up. [Verse 4 — Comedy kicks back in] Then Trigger stopped and stared at a tree, I said, “Well, boy, what do you see?” He froze like a statue, raised one ear, I said, “The squirrel convention must be near!” But nothing moved, not a tail, not a sound, Just a little old leaf came floating down. He chased that leaf like it owed him rent, And I stood there wondering where my evening went! [Spoken — Comedic pause] WHAT DA!? Trigger! That’s a LEAF, son! The squirrels have apparently hired a decoy. AMAZING! [Final Chorus — Big, joyful Southern swing] Oh, the sky put on a show tonight, Clouds all dancing in the golden light! Sun came shining through, saying hello, Painting up the heavens everywhere we’d go! A little bit of laughter, a little bit of grace, A peaceful old evening in a beautiful place. No need to hurry, just take it slow, And let that beautiful evening glow! [Outro — Guitar slows, soft harmonica] [Spoken — Warm and easygoing] Well, y’all… We didn’t find a single squirrel. Didn’t solve any of the world’s problems. Didn’t win the lottery. But we saw a beautiful sky, had ourselves a mighty fine walk, and came home with a good story. And Trigger? Well… He’s still looking for that squirrel. [Short pause] Stay with it. Stay with it. Amazing. All is well. [One playful harmonica note] [Spoken, fading] And if anybody finds them squirrels… Tell ’em Trigger wants a word! [Acoustic guitar ending]
