[Intro — Spoken] Trigger, come here a minute. I’m fixing to give you some advice. Now, whether either one of us takes it… That remains to be seen. [Verse 1] We made it halfway down the sidewalk, Had a pretty decent pace. Then a squirrel dropped off a mailbox, And you nearly left your face. Little legs went into four-wheel, Had that leash stretched good and tight. Son, he’s halfway up that oak tree— You ain’t winning this one tonight. [Chorus] Son, don’t chase every squirrel, You’ll wear yourself clean out. There’s a whole lot going on out here You can let go on about. Keep your nose out of the trouble, Let that bushy tail go twirl. We came out to take a little walk— Son, don’t chase every squirrel! [Verse 2] You inspected seven fence posts, Had some business with a leaf. Then you barked up at a pinecone Like it owed you money, chief. I said, “Boy, you need some patience, Need to learn to let things slide.” Then my phone lit up with nonsense, And I stopped there mid-stride. [Spoken] Well, now, hold on. What’s this fella talking about? [Verse 3] Had my thumb all set for typing, Had a speech prepared to send. Gonna straighten out a stranger I would never see again. Then you gave that leash a little tug, And I looked down at your face. You were standing there beside me While I joined another chase. [Instrumental — Harmonica solo, fiddle answers] [Bridge] I put that phone back in my pocket, We went on around the bend. Found a shady spot by Hampton Pond, Sat down with my little friend. There were ducks out on the water, You watched one without a sound. I could hear the breeze again Once I quit looking down. [Verse 4] I’m still giving you instructions, You still pull from time to time. But that sermon I was preaching Had a little bit of mine. You don’t need the final tree limb, I don’t need the final word. We can head back home for supper Without settling the world. [Final Chorus] Son, don’t chase every squirrel, We’ll wear ourselves clean out. There’s a whole lot going on out here We can let go on about. Keep our noses out of trouble, Let those bushy tails go twirl. There’s a porch and supper waiting— We don’t need another squirrel! [Tag] Got a good dog here beside me, Got some evening left to spare. Let that squirrel go mind his business— We’ve got rocking chairs back there. [Outro — Spoken] See, Trigger? That’s wisdom. You just gotta know when to— [Instrumental stop] Oh, there goes another one. Trigger! Well… we’re still learning. [Harmonica flourish and band finish]
