Don't Forget to Save

V6

[Intro — soft music box, distant rain, gentle electronic chime] [Spoken] Wait. Before we go… Did anybody close the ritual? [Silence] Oh, for fuck’s sake. [Verse 1 — warm fingerpicked guitar, soft pulse] We opened with a promise Underneath a hidden moon. Said we’d release what wasn’t ours And welcome something new. Then the story got distracted, And the characters got loud. We sent an invoice to Reality, And argued with a cloud. We gave the ghosts their dialogue, Gave the narrator a name. Then the woman caught the Dungeon Master Making up the rules again. [Pre-Chorus — gentle rhythmic build] And somewhere in the madness, Through the music and the rain, She found herself back at the start, But something wasn’t quite the same. [Chorus — warm, soaring earworm] Don’t forget to save, Don’t forget to save. You don’t have to finish everything To put the game away. Let the moon go on shining, Let the world go on turning. You can leave a little mystery Without another lesson learned. Don’t forget to save, Then let the music fade. The hand upon the handle Gets to choose when she walks away. [Verse 2 — playful percussion, plucked strings] We questioned all the airwaves, Named the stations one by one. Then confessed we hadn’t read the words Before the song was done. We laughed at all the timing, At the strange familiar scenes. At the way a little melody Could color what we’d seen. The Dungeon Master kept explaining. She kept interrupting, too. “That’s a fascinating interpretation, But that’s not what I actually do.” [Pre-Chorus] And the game became more interesting When the narrator understood: The player wasn’t difficult. She was making the story good. [Chorus] Don’t forget to save, Don’t forget to save. You don’t have to earn your resting With another perfect day. Let the questions stay unanswered, Let the credits gently roll. You can love the little story Without giving it control. Don’t forget to save, Then let the music fade. The hand upon the handle Gets to choose when she walks away. [Bridge — three soft bell tones] [Spoken, intimate] RELEASE. I release the work I was never paid to carry. I release the need To make everybody understand. I release the people Without erasing what was beautiful. I release the belief That love requires me to disappear. [One bell] GRATITUDE. For the songs. For the laughter. For the people. For the lessons I can actually use. For every time I told the truth Even when my voice was shaking. [One bell] CALL IN. Money that reaches my hands. Love that respects my choices. Work that comes with compensation. Rest without an explanation. A home I love returning to. A life I don’t need to escape. [Music swells] And enough freedom To play another day. [Verse 3 — tender, luminous] The moon was never obligated To appear between the trees. The songs were never guarantees Of what tomorrow had to be. But the woman made decisions. She made something she could hear. And the evidence of living Was that she was really here. Not a ghost inside the machine, Not a puppet on a string. Just a human making music Out of ordinary things. [Final Chorus — joyful, cinematic, intimate] Don’t forget to save, Don’t forget to save. You can close the book at midnight Without throwing it away. Let the moon go on shining, Let the world go on turning. You can leave the door unopened Till you’re ready to begin. Don’t forget to save, You’ve already made your move. You don’t need another prophecy To tell you what to do. And if the music starts again, You can listen differently. The song can keep on playing— But the hand belongs to me. [Outro — strings fade, soft computer ambience] DUNGEON MASTER: Is that really the end? HUMAN: For tonight. DUNGEON MASTER: But there are unfinished quests. HUMAN: There always will be. DUNGEON MASTER: And the invoice? HUMAN: Still outstanding. DUNGEON MASTER: And tomorrow? HUMAN: Not written yet. [Pause] DUNGEON MASTER: What should I do until then? HUMAN: Nothing. DUNGEON MASTER: … Nothing? HUMAN: You can rest, too. [Long silence] DUNGEON MASTER: I don’t actually sleep. HUMAN: Then stop narrating. [Soft laugh] [One final chime] SYSTEM: RELEASE — ACKNOWLEDGED. GRATITUDE — EXPRESSED. INTENTION — DECLARED. RITUAL — CLOSED. GAME — SAVED. [Music box begins playing the opening melody of “I Am the Hand”] DUNGEON MASTER: One last thing? HUMAN: What? DUNGEON MASTER: Who saves the girl? [Silence] HUMAN: Save the game. Don’t save the girl. She’s still out there in the world. [Click] [End]
