Planted by the Water

country-gospel, blues, old-time mountain gospel

[Verse 1 – Bubba]
I used to listen to every passing voice,
Let the world tell me how to make my choice.
Sat around with the scorners,
Walked where trouble grows,
Never stopped to wonder
Where that highway goes.

Then I opened up the Word one day,
Heard an old familiar voice say,
Son, there's a better road beneath your feet,
And a sweeter kind of company to keep.

[Chorus – Bubba and Darlene]
Plant me by the water,
Let my roots grow deep.
Give me truth to live by,
Give my soul some peace.
When the summer sun is burning,
When the winter winds blow through,
I'll be planted by the water,
Lord, growing close to You.

[Verse 2 – Darlene]
There's a tree beside the river,
Standing strong and green.
Bearing fruit in season,
Like you've never seen.
Its leaves don't fade and wither,
Its roots have found their home,
Fed by living water,
Never standing all alone.

[Verse 3 – Bubba]
I've chased the dust down a thousand roads,
Carried around some mighty heavy loads.
But chaff goes flying when the hard winds rise,
And empty promises don't satisfy.

Now I read His Word in the morning light,
Think about His goodness in the quiet night.
I ain't saying every day is easy,
But I know where my roots ought to be.

[Chorus – Full Band]
Plant me by the water,
Let my roots grow deep.
Give me truth to live by,
Give my soul some peace.
When the summer sun is burning,
When the winter winds blow through,
I'll be planted by the water,
Lord, growing close to You.

[Bridge – Spoken Rhythm Duet]
[Bubba]
Two roads, two ways,
Two choices every day.

[Darlene]
One like a tree,
One like the chaff blown away.

[Bubba]
One road standing
When the judgment comes.

[Darlene]
One road fading
When the day is done.

[Both]
And the Lord knows the way
Of the ones who walk with Him!

[Instrumental – Harmonica, Piano, Sax]
[Joyful handclaps, upright bass]

[Final Chorus – Gospel Harmony]
Plant us by the water,
Let our roots grow deep.
Put Your truth inside us,
Give our hearts Your peace.
Through every changing season,
Let our lives bear fruit,
Keep us planted by the water,
Lord, our hope is found in You!

[Outro – Bubba Spoken]
The wind can blow.
The seasons can change.
But a tree with good roots...
Well, it'll keep on growing.

[Darlene – Softly Sung]
Planted by the water...

[Both]
Amen.
