Intro Country stories are a must When you’re sittin’ by the campfire glow. Pull up a log, ’Cause what I’m ’bout to tell ya… Well, it’s honest,,, and it’s true, y’know. Verse 1 The call goes out around the camp, “The bait is runnin’ low!” Dad hollers, “Oi, get over here.... C’mon, grab some soap!” And when you’re just a kid, mate, Obedience is king.... You don’t ask why, You just do the darn thing. So I lathered up like a bubble bath, From me elbows to me shins, Dad’s grinning like a kookaburra, Sayin’, “Righto - in ya get, .... get in!” Chorus Jump in the river, Keep your fingers and toes a-wrigglin’ bright, Attract those critters Crawlin’ ’round in the dark of night. We need them crayfish, Tasty little blighters we can’t waste.... And all I hear from the riverbank Is “More soap! Hurry up! Make haste!” Verse 2 “Give her some more soap!” echoes Across the muddy shore, “Thicken up that lather.... We’ll need crayfish by the score!” I’m splashin’ like a platypus, Half freezing, half annoyed.... But hey, when the old man’s hungry There’s a job you can’t avoid. Suddenly -- SNAP! -- a cray clamps on, I jump like a kangaroo, Dad cheers, “That’s the spirit, love! They’re lining up for you!” Chorus Jump in the river, Keep your fingers and toes a-wrigglin’ bright, Attract those critters Crawlin’ ’round in the dark of night. We need them crayfish, Tasty little blighters we can’t waste.... And all I hear from the riverbank Is “More soap! Hurry up! Make haste!” Outro So that’s me tale of suds and snaps, A childhood bush crusade.... The night I learned that in Australia Kids get volunteered for bait. Now every time I smell fresh soap I laugh.... and kinda sigh.... ’Cause I still expect a crayfish Nibblin’ on me thigh. [music continues for 8 beats]
