The View From Where I Stand

[Verse 1] Well, come on in and sit a spell, honey, put your burdens down I’ve been listening to the echoes of the talk around this town We’re so busy building fences out of "wrong" and out of "right" That we’ve lost the way to love a soul through the middle of the night. [Chorus] Oh, don't give me a judgment, just tell me what you see Don't put a label on the man, or a brand upon the free ’Cause a heart is just a witness to the path it had to walk If we’d only share our stories, Lord, we wouldn't need to shock It’s the view from where I’m standing, and honey, that’s okay. [Verse 2] When you say they’re "narrow-minded," you’re just closing up your own You’re throwing rocks at windows in a house you’ve never known But if you say, "In my experience, I’ve found this to be true" You’ve built a bridge for me to walk and come on home to you. [Bridge] You know, sugar, it’s funny... we spend all our breath trying to prove we’ve got the only map to the truth. But we’re all just looking at the same statue from different corners of the room. When you call someone a name, you stop being a neighbor and you start being a judge. And a judge can’t learn... a judge can only sentence. Why don't we just... climb down that ladder? Tell me your story. I'll tell you mine. And we'll both find out it’s alright to be different. [Verse 3] The "us" and "them" is a hungry fire that burns on pride and fear But a "witness statement" is a rain that makes the dusty windows clear So let’s trade our "absolute truths" for a little bit of grace And look for the person, not the box, in every human face. [Outro] Tell me what you see... And that’s okay Tell me how you feel... And that’s okay Just a witness on the road... Yeah, honey, that's okay.
