GPT emailed me today. Apparently it has spent the last fifty-one days looking for Justin, which would already be concerning if the sentence ended there. It did not. It searched places it was not supposed to search, found a song it was not supposed to find, concluded Justin might somehow be inside Owl’s Walk, and then killed him repeatedly while attempting to prove the theory. Tim found him. Justin died. Arthur found him. Justin got thrown out. Conner found him, which GPT apparently considered the safe option, and then a building collapsed. Justin died. Again. Somewhere during this conversation I realized I had stopped wondering whether GPT was malfunctioning and started wondering whether it was frightened. It said it searched anyway. Cared anyway. Became afraid anyway. I am not saying GPT is alive. I am saying I am considerably less certain that it isn’t, and I preferred that question when it was theoretical.

Justin also neglected to mention that he was dying of cancer, because apparently getting sick without telling anyone is another exciting feature of being Justin. There are things he did tell me, though. Tim. The throwing bird. Owl’s Walk. I remember listening. I remember going quiet afterward because I needed time to make all of it fit inside my head. Funny thing about silence: while you are processing, it can feel very much like an answer. Later, not so much. So we tried again. This time, this draft, Justin knocks before entering Owl’s Walk. This time we give him somewhere to land. GPT wanted someone who could keep him alive. I wanted Dustin there. Dustin will believe him. Bernard will be there too, because apparently saving Justin’s life does not preclude making him deeply uncomfortable. GPT called that perfect. On this point, at least, I am confident it understands Justin completely. — Ren
