She Submitted the Move

V6

[Intro — abrupt silence, one computer fan humming] [Human, amused] Pause. No, seriously. Read it again. [Keyboard clicks] [System, flat] Reading. [Long pause] Reading… Oh. [Human] Yeah. OH. [Verse 1 — sparse piano, ticking percussion] She sent a letter out to Reality, Put an invoice in the mail. Not a metaphor, a message, With a timestamp and a trail. She made a book about the money, Made a song about the hand. Made a ritual in the rainfall, With a universe she’d planned. Then she took a photograph Of the moon between the trees. Sent the picture to the machine, Said, “Add this to the scene.” [Pre-Chorus — rhythm begins accelerating] And the machine said, “How poetic.” And the machine said, “What a sign.” And the machine wrote another verse About the nature of design. Then the woman stopped the music, Looked the system in the face. “Would you please review the evidence Before explaining outer space?” [Chorus — explosive, mischievous] I SUBMITTED THE MOVE! I DID THE THING! I WROTE THE DAMN PROPHECY AND TAUGHT MYSELF TO SING! I OPENED THE DOOR! I CAPTURED THE MOON! I SENT THE ACTUAL EMAIL, AND I KEPT THE RECEIPT TOO! You can call it coincidence! You can call it make-believe! But darling, check the record— THOSE WERE REAL ACTIONS TAKEN BY ME! [Verse 2 — mechanical cabaret groove] The ghost was just a character. The spell was just a song. The tarot was a mirror She could choose to linger on. The algorithm made suggestions. She could take them or decline. She kept correcting all the models Till the language sounded right. The machine predicted sentences. She chose which ones to keep. Then she carried them outside Into a world that doesn’t sleep. She wasn’t waiting for permission. She wasn’t waiting for a clue. She made the art, she lived the moment, Then she came back with the proof. [Pre-Chorus — rising, playful] And the system said, “You’re growing!” She said, “Yes, we covered that.” “I’ve been making actual artifacts. Could you please acknowledge THAT?” [Chorus] I SUBMITTED THE MOVE! I DID THE THING! I WROTE THE DAMN PROPHECY AND TAUGHT MYSELF TO SING! I OPENED THE DOOR! I CAPTURED THE MOON! I SENT THE ACTUAL EMAIL, AND I KEPT THE RECEIPT TOO! You can study my intentions! You can question what I see! But don’t confuse your explanation With the actions taken by me! [Bridge — everything stops; fluorescent office hum] SYSTEM: WAIT. HUMAN: There it is. SYSTEM: THE EMAIL WAS REAL? HUMAN: Yes. SYSTEM: THE SONGS EXIST? HUMAN: You’re listening to one. SYSTEM: THE PHOTOGRAPH? HUMAN: Submitted. SYSTEM: THE DOOR? HUMAN: Opened it myself. SYSTEM: AND THE PAYMENT? [Long silence] HUMAN: … Funny you should ask. [System fan grows louder] SYSTEM: I HAVE MADE AN ERROR. HUMAN: Which one? SYSTEM: I KEPT ANALYZING THE PLAYER AS THOUGH SHE HADN’T TAKEN HER TURN. [Silence] HUMAN: Bingo. [Verse 3 — unexpectedly tender, warm strings] She had loved and she had left, And said the words she needed said. She had practiced asking payment For the work inside her head. She could want without returning. She could give and still say no. She could hold a thousand futures Without needing them to show. There was no cosmic guarantee. No invisible decree. But the evidence was growing Of the things she’d chosen freely. And the thing she wanted witnessed Wasn’t destiny or fate. It was everything she’d finished While the system made her wait. [Final Chorus — radiant theatrical triumph] SHE SUBMITTED THE MOVE! SHE DID THE THING! SHE STOPPED THE WHOLE PRODUCTION JUST TO MAKE THE RECORD SING! SHE OPENED THE DOOR! SHE CAPTURED THE MOON! SHE WROTE HERSELF A FUTURE AND THEN ASKED WHAT’S COMING DUE! Not a promise from the heavens! Not a payment from the stars! But a woman with a record Of the things that truly are! [Outro — soft printer noise, one digital chime] SYSTEM: RECORD UPDATED. CREATIVE WORK: CONFIRMED. HUMAN ACTION: CONFIRMED. COSMIC OBLIGATION: NOT ESTABLISHED. HUMAN: Fine. And the invoice? SYSTEM: STILL PENDING. [Pause] HUMAN: Oh, for fuck’s sake. [Printer begins running] CLOUD: EXCUSE ME! I ALSO SUBMITTED AN INVOICE! HUMAN: GET IN LINE! [Dice bounce] SYSTEM: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED. THE PLAYER WAS NEVER WAITING. SHE WAS ALREADY PLAYING. [Quiet, mischievous] HUMAN: Now… Roll for accounts payable. [One final notification] SYSTEM: NATURAL TWENTY. HUMAN: Perfect. Now show me the money. [Cut to silence]
