The True Blue (A Brother’s Warning)

[Intro] If you’re doing the job right, you don't need a shadow to work in. This is for the ones who stand in the light. [Verse 1] I’ve seen the badge in the kitchen, I’ve seen it on the street Forty years of family walking on that beat I’ve pulled the stretcher from the fire, I’ve stood out in the rain I know the weight of the metal, I know the sting of the pain But there’s a shadow in the alley, driving a car with no name And a man behind a mask... playing a coward’s game. [Verse 2] Now listen close to the truth, it’s a simple kind of law A professional stands steady, he don't care what you saw If you’re acting with honor, if you’re doing the work true There ain't no reason to hide what you’re there to do You shouldn't be upset when the camera’s on the scene 'Cause a man with nothing to hide don't fear the screen. [Chorus] I’m talkin’ 'bout the True Blue, the ones who stand in the light But you’re puttin’ them in danger when you don't do right Every time you’re cruel, every time you hide your face You leave a stain on the uniform that time can’t erase Yeah, the professional’s payin’ for the sins you sow And it’s a long, dark road for a good man to go. [Verse 3] The news is screaming loud, the video’s plain to see A cold heart acting like he’s judge and the jury Now when the honest officer pulls 'em over in the night The driver ain’t seeing safety—he’s shaking with fright You think that mask protects you? Man, you got it all wrong You’re just making the target on your brother more strong. [Bridge] From the Fire hall to the Precinct, we’re all on the same line But you’re breaking the bond and you’re wasting our time If you're behaving properly, you got nothing to shroud Step out of the dark and stand tall and proud! [Verse 4] Think of the wife at the table, think of the kids in the bed While the ghost in the unmarked car is filling folks with dread The "Blue" I back is the one who’s got nothing to hide Who carries the truth and his honor with pride. [Outro] Take off the mask, son... let 'em see the man A bully in the shadows wasn't part of the plan. If you're doing it right, you don't mind the eye Only a man with a secret needs to live a lie. Back the Blue... The Honest Blue.
