I Thought He Was My Dog

V6

[INTRO – Walking bass, playful electric guitar, harmonica] [BUBBA – MALE SPOKEN] Well, good morning, Darlene. You sure you're ready to walk with us? [DARLENE – FEMALE SPOKEN] I'm ready, Bubba. But who's walking who? [BUBBA – SPOKEN] Well, that's a mighty good question. Trigger's been running this operation for years. [DARLENE – SPOKEN] Well, hello there, handsome! [BUBBA – SPOKEN] Why, thank you, Darlene. [DARLENE – LAUGHING] I was talking to the dog! [Band kicks into swinging groove] [VERSE 1 – BUBBA MALE SINGING] We headed down Crown Parkway With the morning shining bright I had Trigger on his little leash And everything was right Then Darlene came around the bend With a smile from ear to ear That little white dog took one look Said, "My new best friend's here!" [VERSE 2 – DARLENE FEMALE SINGING] Well, I knelt down to say hello And scratched behind his ear He rolled right over on his back Like he'd known me twenty years Bubba stood there shaking his head Said, "Now ain't that something wrong? I've been feeding that boy for years And you steal him before we're gone!" [CHORUS – BUBBA LEAD, DARLENE RESPONDS] [BUBBA] I thought he was my dog Till Darlene came along! [DARLENE] One little scratch behind his ears And now he's singing my song! [BUBBA] He won't listen when I call him! [DARLENE] But he follows me around! [BOTH – HARMONY] Two good friends and four little paws Making music through this town! [BUBBA] I thought he was my dog! [DARLENE] Well, honey, you thought wrong! [BOTH] Everybody's walking happy Since Darlene came along! [INSTRUMENTAL – Honky-tonk piano and harmonica] [VERSE 3 – BUBBA MALE] We made it down to Hampton Pond And Trigger found a leaf He carried it around a while Like some important chief Darlene started laughing Said, "That boy's a character!" I said, "You oughta see him When a squirrel runs past us, girl!" [DARLENE – SPOKEN] Bubba, does he always have this much energy? [BUBBA – SPOKEN] Oh, no, ma'am. Sometimes he has twice as much! [DARLENE – LAUGHING] Well, bless his little heart! [VERSE 4 – DARLENE FEMALE] I brought along my saxophone You brought that old harmonica We stopped beside the water Where the morning sun was falling I played a little melody And Bubba answered back Trigger sat between us Like the leader of the band [BUBBA – SPOKEN] Well, look at that. Now he's conducting the orchestra! [DARLENE – SPOKEN] Then you better play what the mayor wants! [SAXOPHONE AND HARMONICA DUEL] [Bright female-style tenor sax melody] [Answering blues harmonica] [Playful piano fills] [Full band swing] [CHORUS – FULL DUET] [BUBBA] I thought he was my dog Till Darlene came along! [DARLENE] One little scratch behind his ears And now he's singing my song! [BUBBA] He won't listen when I call him! [DARLENE] But he follows me around! [BOTH] Two good friends and four little paws Making music through this town! [BRIDGE – MUSIC SOFTENS] [BUBBA – WARM SPOKEN-SINGING] You know, Darlene, There was a time I'd hurry through this walk. Had somewhere else on my mind. Somewhere else I thought I oughta be. [DARLENE – GENTLE FEMALE SPOKEN] And now? [BUBBA – SINGING] Now I hear the birds in the trees Feel that sunshine on my face Got a little dog and a good old friend And I ain't in no race [DARLENE – SINGING] Sometimes the sweetest part of life Ain't something big or grand It's a walk beside the water With a friend who understands [BOTH – SOFT HARMONY] And if we never get nowhere That's all right with me There's a whole lot of living In the little things we see [BUILD – Drums, piano, guitar] [FINAL CHORUS – BIG HAPPY SWING] [BUBBA] I thought he was my dog Till Darlene came along! [DARLENE] Now he's got us both out walking And we're singing the same song! [BUBBA] He's the mayor of Crown Parkway! [DARLENE] And he's everybody's friend! [BOTH] We'll take another walk tomorrow And do it all again! [BUBBA] I thought he was my dog! [DARLENE] Well, maybe he still is! [BOTH] But there's room enough for friendship When you've got a heart like his! [OUTRO – SPOKEN OVER WALKING GUITAR] [BUBBA] Well, Darlene, I appreciate you walking with us. [DARLENE] I enjoyed it, Bubba. And Trigger, you are one fine gentleman. [BUBBA] What about me? [DARLENE] Well... you're holding the leash. [BUBBA] Ha ha ha! Everybody's a comedian! [DARLENE] See you boys next time! [BUBBA] Come on, Trigger. Let's get this fellow home. [Short pause] [BUBBA] Wait a minute! Why are you following Darlene? [DARLENE – LAUGHING] Bye, Bubba! [BUBBA – LAUGHING] Lord have mercy! I've lost my dog! [BUBBA – GENTLY] All is well. [FINAL SAX AND HARMONICA RIFF] [Big piano ending]
