What Else Is Possible?

V6

[Intro — warm percussion, irregular bass groove, curious little synth notes] “So, what exactly do you do?” [Pause] “Depends.” “On what?” “What are we trying to make possible?” [Percussion tumbles into a playful groove] [Verse 1] There’s a woman with a warehouse Full of things she cannot sell There’s a man with twenty acres And a story he could tell There’s a town that’s losing visitors A building sitting bare An artist with a thousand sketches That have never gone nowhere Someone says, “We need a website.” Someone says, “We need a grant.” Someone says, “We tried that once.” Someone else says, “No, we can’t.” And I listen to the questions And the pieces on the floor Till a little light goes flicker— Wait, I’ve seen these parts before. [Pre-Chorus — syncopated, playful] Take a little bit of this Put it next to something strange Turn the picture upside down And suddenly the pieces change Oh, I wonder— Oh, I wonder— [Chorus — bright, rhythmic, exhilarating] What else is possible? What haven’t we tried? What if there’s a doorway Where we thought there was a wall inside? What else is possible? What’s hiding in plain sight? Take a thing that doesn’t fit And put it somewhere it just might! I don’t need the whole solution I don’t need to know the end Just give me one intriguing question And a reason to begin! [Post-Chorus — layered percussion, elastic bass] Click! That’s a connection. Pop! That’s a twist. Wait— Did anybody think of this? [Verse 2] What if that old empty storefront Was a workshop twice a week? What if tourists bought a passport To the stories they could seek? What if artists made the puzzles And the shops became the clues? What if every little purchase Helped another dream come true? What if people learned by playing? What if strangers built a team? What if something someone discarded Was the centerpiece of a scheme? And somebody says, “That’s ambitious.” And somebody says, “That’s new.” And I say, “Well, let’s investigate What it would take to do.” [Pre-Chorus — drums shift unexpectedly] Not every thought’s a business Not every spark’s a plan But we can test a little prototype And see if it’ll stand Ooh, I wonder— Ooh, I wonder— [Chorus] What else is possible? What haven’t we tried? What if there’s a doorway Where we thought there was a wall inside? What else is possible? What’s hiding in plain sight? Take a thing that doesn’t fit And put it somewhere it just might! I don’t need the whole solution I don’t need to know the end Just give me one intriguing question And a reason to begin! [Bridge — stripped-down percussion and bass, conversational] “Could you put together a proposal?” “Absolutely. What’s the budget range?” “We’re still figuring that out.” “Then let’s start with a discovery phase.” “Can you do the whole thing yourself?” “I could build the concept. I’d bring in specialists for the rest.” “And if we want to add more later?” “I’ll quote the additional scope.” [Beat pauses] “How many ideas do you have?” [Small laugh] “How much time have you got?” [Instrumental break — psychedelic guitar, bouncing bass, strange analog synth textures] [Verse 3 — rhythmic, delighted] I’ve got a notebook full of maybe And a calendar with space I can leave a little mystery Without calling it a race Some ideas belong to somebody Some are mine to bring to life Some are beautiful for five whole minutes Then I wave them a goodbye And the ones that keep on knocking Get a table and a chair Get a budget, get a deadline Get a reason to be there I don’t owe my every brainstorm A business and a name I can love a hundred possibilities And choose which ones I claim [Final Chorus — increasingly joyful, percussion explodes] What else is possible? What haven’t I seen? What if I could make a living Making room for what could be? What else is possible? How far can this go? I can build a little prototype And let the evidence show! I can ask another question I can invite another mind I can make a good arrangement Where we all enjoy the ride What else is possible? Oh, isn’t it absurd— A whole new world can sometimes start With one ridiculous word: [Break — everything stops] “What if?” [Outro — bass and percussion return, almost laughing] “So… what’s your job title?” [Pause] “Haven’t settled on one.” “Doesn’t that worry you?” “Nope.” “Why not?” [Smile in the voice] “I’m much more interested in the job description.” [Final playful synth flourish]
