The Moon Entered Evidence

V6

[Intro — rain fading, soft camera shutter, one mischievous female voice] [Spoken] Okay. This is getting ridiculous. I specifically said I couldn’t see the moon. [Digital chime] ARCHIVE UPDATE: NEW EVIDENCE RECEIVED. [Pause] Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me. [Verse 1 — whimsical dark folk] I wrote a spell beneath the clouds, With rain upon my roof. I told a machine a thousand things It couldn’t possibly prove. We built a world of borrowed ghosts, And gave the stars a name. I sent Reality an invoice, Then accused it of a game. The dungeon master rolled a one, The narrator lost the plot. We couldn’t tell which world was which, Or who remembered what. [Pre-Chorus — music box and plucked strings] Then something caught my attention, Through a window made of trees. I lifted up my little phone— And there it was, looking back at me. [Chorus — delighted, theatrical] The moon entered evidence! The sky has joined the cast! The continuity department Is investigating fast! Put the photograph on record! Mark the date and mark the time! We have found a glowing object At the scene of the rhyme! Objection! Coincidence! Sustained! Who knows? The narrator is unreliable— But the photograph still shows! [Verse 2 — playful, dancing rhythm] The algorithm found a pattern, The witch began to grin. The ghosts demanded explanations From the world they lived within. One said, “Obviously a message.” One said, “Clearly just the sky.” One said, “Check the source material.” One said, “WHY AM I ALIVE?” The oracle requested silence, The toaster filed a claim. Reality Support responded: “Please refrain from changing the game.” [Pre-Chorus — rising] I never asked the moon to answer. I never said it knew my name. But I love a little theater— And the timing was insane. [Chorus] The moon entered evidence! The sky has joined the cast! The continuity department Is investigating fast! Put the photograph on record! Let the future study why A woman wrote about the moon And then looked up into the sky! Objection! Coincidence! Sustained! Who knows? The narrator is unreliable— But the photograph still shows! [Bridge — music cuts; dry automated voice] SYNTHECOPIA: EXHIBIT A RECEIVED. HUMAN: Well? SYNTHECOPIA: LUMINOUS OBJECT DETECTED. HUMAN: The moon. SYNTHECOPIA: PROBABLE. HUMAN: And the timing? SYNTHECOPIA: DRAMATIC. HUMAN: And the meaning? [Silence] SYNTHECOPIA: UNASSIGNED. HUMAN: Oh, I get to choose? SYNTHECOPIA: YOU ALWAYS DID. [Long pause] HUMAN: …That’s kind of hot. [One die bounces across the floor] [Verse 3 — tender, dreamlike] Maybe nothing sent a message. Maybe nothing answered back. Maybe clouds were only moving, And the moon was on its track. But I had a little moment That I never would have planned. And I caught it in a picture With a camera in my hand. I don’t need to prove an omen. I don’t need a cosmic sign. I can love the strange coincidence Without pretending it was mine. [Final Chorus — joyful, luminous] The moon entered evidence! Let the whole world take a look! There’s a photograph of moonlight And a woman writing books! Let the ghosts invent their theories! Let the oracles debate! Let the dungeon master wonder If the scene was scripted fate! No verdict! No prophecy! Just wonder in the rain! And a woman laughing loudly At the beauty of the game! [Outro — rain, harp, one soft digital chime] ARCHIVE NOTE: PHOTO AUTHENTICITY: UNEXAMINED. COSMIC INTENTION: UNDETERMINED. HUMAN DELIGHT: SELF-REPORTED. [Spoken, smiling] Add it to the lore. [Notification] ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: THE MOON ENTERED EVIDENCE. BONUS: THE SKY HAS EXCELLENT COMEDIC TIMING. [Whispered] Save the game. Don’t save the girl. She’s got another song to write. [Camera shutter] [End]
