The Lake of the Dismal Swamp

[Verse] Once a legend was told That in the Dismal Swamp A sad young lover drowned And he was never found [Verse 2] His love was buried in the swamp And his shade haunts the place And he keeps singing this song About his cruel fate [Chorus] Where the light wind died on the wet grass And the mist lay under the trees The flowers hung as the footsteps passed Of the lover alone with his agonies [Verse 3] And they told me that the lost one lay When I wandered down the boggy way To the lake of the Dismal Swamp That the moon had led astray [Verse 4] And I who are bound by my misery And cannot get free Should go to that lover by night who lies And love them as they did me [Chorus] Where the light wind died on the wet grass And the mist lay under the trees The flowers hung as the footsteps passed Of the lover alone with his agonies
