That's Your Reflection, Son

V6

That’s Your Reflection, Son Bubba Patrick — Porch Wisdom with Bubba & Trigger [Intro — Piano boogie, Martin guitar] [Spoken] Trigger… There ain’t another dog in that window. That one’s wearing your collar. [Verse 1] We went walking after supper, Sun was settling through the trees. You were checking out a storefront When you stopped right next to me. There he stood behind the window, Little white dog, mighty bold. Every time you leaned in closer, He came closer, nose to nose. [Verse 2] Well, you puffed up like a rooster, And he puffed up right on cue. Then you gave a little warning— He was giving one back too. You stepped left, he did the same thing. You stepped right, he followed through. You looked up like, “Can you see this? Look what this fool’s trying to do!” [Chorus] That’s your reflection, son, That’s you looking back. Same little ears, same muddy paws, Same collar on his neck. You can stand there getting sideways, But he’s gonna give you some. Try a little tail wag— That’s your reflection, son! [Verse 3] Next morning at the table, I was talking over toast. Said, “Some people never listen, Gotta talk more than the most.” Heather started telling something, I jumped in before halfway. Said, “That reminds me—” then I noticed How she set her coffee away. [Spoken] Go ahead, honey. [Pause] Yes, I hear it now. [Verse 4] I was fixing up a sermon For somebody down the street, While the very thing that bugged me Had pulled up a chair in me. So I let her finish talking, Heard a part I would’ve missed. Turns out she had quite a story— I was glad I stopped for it. [Chorus] That’s your reflection, son, That’s you looking back. Same little ears, same muddy paws, Same collar on his neck. You can stand there getting sideways, But he’s gonna give you some. Try a little tail wag— That’s your reflection, son! [Instrumental — Harmonica solo, piano answers] [Bridge] Every fuss ain’t my reflection, Sometimes something’s truly wrong. But before I start explaining How the world should get along, I can take a little breather, Hear the words I’m putting out. Might discover I’ve been doing What I’m fussing most about. [Verse 5] We passed by that window Friday, And you slowed down for a look. There he was, your old acquaintance, Standing where he always stood. You leaned forward, wagged a little, Then went strolling on with me. Two fine dogs behaved themselves there— Only one of ’em needed a treat. [Final Chorus] That’s your reflection, son, That’s you looking back. Same little grin, same curious eyes, Same collar on his neck. You can leave him there in peace now, We got walking left to get done. He looks friendlier this evening— That’s your reflection, son! [Tag] I’m still learning at the table, You’re still learning on our runs. We both look a little better When we quit jumping the gun. [Outro — Spoken] Handsome little fellow, though. I’ll give you that. [Pause] Yes, Trigger. You too. [Harmonica flourish and band finish]
