The Great October Leaf Chase

V6

[Spoken Intro – Bubba, acoustic guitar picking] Well, good morning, Trigger. Looks like autumn finally showed up here in Carolina. Look at all them pretty leaves! Wait a minute, boy. That's just a leaf. Trigger... TRIGGER! [Laughing] Well, here we go again! [Upbeat harmonica and banjo intro] [Verse 1] Coffee in my belly, boots on my feet, Little white Westie heading down the street. October wind blowing, sun shining bright, Everything's golden in the morning light. We made it to the corner, everything was fine, Till a little red leaf went floating by. His ears stood up and his tail went high, Like a mighty big dragon just fell from the sky! [Pre-Chorus] I said, "Easy there, buddy, let that thing go!" But he took off running like a rodeo show. Four little paws and a whole lot of nerve, Nearly pulled old Bubba right off the curb! [Chorus] Run, Trigger, run, let them red leaves fly! Little white tornado underneath that sky! Round and round, dancing with the breeze, King of the sidewalk, chasing autumn leaves! Hey! Here comes another one! Look out, son, here comes two! I thought I was walking my little dog, But that little dog's walking me too! [Harmonica solo – playful country blues] [Verse 2] One went left and another went right, Trigger couldn't decide which one to fight. A big yellow leaf landed right on his head, He shook it off and took off again! Old neighbor laughed from across the lawn, Said, "That little dog's been going since dawn!" I tipped my hat, said, "You got that right, He'll be chasing them leaves till Saturday night!" [Pre-Chorus] My leash got twisted, my hat blew away, But I wouldn't trade a minute of this beautiful day. He doesn't need a reason, doesn't need a plan, Just a gust of wind and a happy old man! [Chorus] Run, Trigger, run, let them red leaves fly! Little white tornado underneath that sky! Round and round, dancing with the breeze, King of the sidewalk, chasing autumn leaves! Hey! Here comes another one! Look out, son, here comes three! I thought I was walking my little dog, But that little dog's walking me! [Instrumental Break] [Banjo and harmonica trade playful riffs] [Acoustic guitar keeps a bouncing rhythm] [Verse 3] We finally found a quiet little place, Trigger sat down with a leaf on his face. I brushed it away and he looked up at me, Like he had conquered every leaf on every tree. I started laughing till my eyes got wet, Thinking about the things I used to sweat. You can't stop the wind, can't make time stay, But you can sure enjoy a beautiful day. [Bridge – Spoken, gentle guitar] You know something, Trigger? I spent a whole lot of years trying to get somewhere. Always chasing this, always worrying about that. And here you are... Happy chasing a leaf that you ain't even gonna keep. [Laughing softly] Maybe you know something I don't, buddy. [Harmonica plays three warm notes] [Final Chorus – Full band] Run, Trigger, run, let them red leaves fly! Little white tornado underneath that sky! Round and round, dancing with the breeze, Thank You, Lord, for mornings like these! Hey! Here comes another one! Look out, son, here comes two! A little dog, a Carolina road, And a whole lot of living left to do! [Outro – Spoken over harmonica] Well, Trigger... I reckon we'd better head home. Wait a minute. What's that in your mouth? Is that a LEAF? [Laughing] Son, we've got about ten thousand more of them in the yard! Come on, little buddy. All is well. [Extended cheerful harmonica outro] [Banjo and guitar finish together]
