Patrons come and go, but there is always one seat untouched by dust, one cup filled but never emptied. It belongs to the man they call *Kazekiri*, the Windcutter. No one knows his true name. Only that wherever he walks, silence follows. Wherever his blade strikes, no sound is heard—only the rustle of leaves, or the hush of snowfall. But she remembers. Back in a village far from the blood and spells of war, a girl waits beneath the same moon, sending letters on lanterns into the night sky. “Are you still carving your name into steel?” she asks the wind. “Do you still smile as if you’re not breaking?” They say he fights for no one. They are wrong. Each time he lifts his blade, it is her voice that echoes in his mind. Each time he vanishes into smoke and shadow, it is her warmth he loses. Tonight, the tavern glows dimmer than usual. The wind carries a scent of iron and pine. The koto in the corner plays without a player.
