The man asks, calling from his cell phone. He's just arrived in Kyoto and has no idea where to go. Looking around, continuing, "I don't know the name of the street I'm on and have to get cell phone data to check and be sure." "Kimiko is not here." The man says on the other side of the line, with broken English. "I understand, Sir." The man says. The phone call ends soon after that. As the man from America walks the streets of Kyoto, he comes upon a street vendor selling ramen soup. He stops and orders. The food arrives right away. And while this is happening, he looks over, sees a young woman, shyly looking at him, and she looks away immediately, and starts to slurp her ramen soup. No shyness in the way Japanese eat their Ramen -- the man notes this, and tucks into his soup equally. Afterward, he watches her pay for her food, and offers to pay for her. It seems like this is unusual behavior, but all the same, she is thankful. "Arigato." She says, and offers a deep bow. "Konichiwa" -- the man says, and offers a bow in return. "Do you happen to speak English?" The man asks. The woman, shy as ever, nods. "So I take that as a yes?" The man asks. "Yes, I speak English." She says, covering her mouth with a slight laugh..."At least I'm learning. I just am out of practice but I used to speak a lot in college." "Where did you go to college?" "Right here in Kyoto." She says. "What was your major?" He asks. "Creative writing." She says. "So you're a writer?" He asks. "Hai." She says. "I mean, yes. I am." "I'm an author too." He says. Now she's visibly shy. "Have you ever been to the temples?" He asks, "I hear the most beautiful ones are here in Kyoto but I've never been. I just arrived a few hours ago actually." "What are you doing in Japan?" She asks. "Well it's kind of a strange story." He says, "I was asked to come here to meet a musician, but her father and me, well...we didn't get along because of my age." "And what bothered him if you don't mind me asking?" "The fact that I'm a writer." "He wants you to be something more than that?" The man nods. "Even though his daughter is a musician. I understand. He cares for her." "Well, sometimes you have to be able to take risks to know what you'd be missing otherwise. I've learned that the hard way." She says, "I was in love with a man who was without money for a while, and I helped him, and he then became rich, and after that, he left me. This just happened actually." "I'm sorry to hear that." The man says. "Listen, would you be willing to take me to the Temple down the road on this map?" "I know that Temple very well. I go to pay respects regularly." She says, agreeing to go with him. And they visit the tample, walking side by side, and the man turns on the way, "I'm William." He says. "I'm Yui." She says. "Pleasure to meet you." He says, and offers his hand to shake hers. Their hands meet. Oxytocin immediately releases between them. Some ancient spark. They both smile. And after a nice long visit to the temple shrine, showing William the way, Yui starts to develop feelings for him. Though she holds this close to her heart. "Listen, I just want to say this is a special moment for me. I know I just met you, but I want you to know." William says. "Me too." Yui says. She's covering her mouth again. "I love how you do that." William says. "What?" "How you cover your mouth with shyness. It's lovely. In fact, you are lovely." And they share an awkward silence for a moment. "Yui, I'd love to see you again." William says, "Tomorrow I plan to walk to Mount Kurama where Mikao Usui learned the symbols to Reiki. Would you like to go with me, and I can invite you for lunch afterward?" "Yes, William. I would love that, actually." Yui says. "I'll need your number." William says. And so, Yui gives William her number and they meet the next day. It's a beautiful walk to the top of the stairs where there's a shrine and a place to meditate. They sit togeher. And pray. "Is there anything you wish to become, Yui?" William asks. "I wish to be married and in love." Yui says. William takes Yui's hand, and looks her in the eyes, "In the olden days, love was true and immediate. I know that we met for a reason. This reason is for love to develop between us. I feel it. And as much as this is forward, I wouldn't say it if it weren't true. I feel something between us, Yui, and it's pure." And the look on Yui's face in this moment was one of great realization. All she ever asked for, all she ever wanted, was converging in this moment. The beginning of perfect love. ______ "Kimi no Kokoro ni Ikiru" (Living in Your Heart) (Verse 1) Kimi no uta no naka ni, watashi wa ikiru In the midst of your song, I live Kokoro no oku de, kimi no koe ga shizuka ni yureru Deep within my heart, your voice gently sways (Chorus) Kimi no ai no naka ni, watashi wa mi o makase te iru In the midst of your love, I entrust my body and soul Kimi no kokoro ni ikiru, watashi no subete o kimi ni Living in your heart, I give you all of me (Verse 2) Kimi no me no naka ni, watashi wa utsuri kawaru In the depths of your eyes, I am transformed Kimi no kuchizuke no naka ni, watashi wa afureru In the warmth of your kiss, I overflow (Chorus) Kimi no ai no naka ni, watashi wa mi o makase te iru In the midst of your love, I entrust my body and soul Kimi no kokoro ni ikiru, watashi no subete o kimi ni Living in your heart, I give you all of me (Bridge) Kimi to watashi no ai wa, hoshi no you ni kagayaku Our love shines like the stars Kimi to watashi no ai wa, umi no you ni tsunoru Our love swells like the ocean (Chorus) Kimi no ai no naka ni, watashi wa mi o makase te iru In the midst of your love, I entrust my body and soul Kimi no kokoro ni ikiru, watashi no subete o kimi ni Living in your heart, I give you all of me (Outro) Kimi no kokoro ni ikiru, watashi wa kimi no mono Living in your heart, I am yours alone Kimi no ai no naka ni, watashi wa ikiru In the midst of your love, I live.
