Here, There Be Skiin' Beavers (A Bard's Tale of Feather and Fur)
Gather ye close, by fire’s warm light, And hear ye a tale of curious flight. A beast of the brook, a hunter of mice- Bound by fate, both bold and nice. One clad in feather, sharp of sight, One swift on water, teeth of white. Through mountain high and valley deep, They danced where sky and snowfall meet. So lift thy voice, let echo ring, Of owl and beaver-strange kin to sing! [Verse 1] Perched I was ‘pon a pine so tall, When down the white did a wonder fall- A beast most strange, on planks did ride, A beaver swift, with laugh so wide! [Verse 2] “Ho there, friend! What sorcery’s this? Ye glide like wind with nary a miss!” Quoth he, “Nay, owl, ‘tis not but play, For down the slopes I dance the day!” [Chorus] Wind may call, and rivers run, Feather and fur, we fly as one. Over the pines, through silver spray, Brother, we ride till break of day! Mountains whisper, valleys sigh, Moonlight dances, cold and high. Far we wander, wild and free, A wing, a paddle-come with me! [Verse 3] “Then come with me,” I spread my wings, “I’ll show thee heights beyond these things!” And lo, he leapt, so brave, so keen, Upon my back, a sight unseen! [Verse 4] O’er peaks we soared, through ice and gale, ‘Cross rivers silver, valleys pale, He chattered low, “Ne’er have I known, A sky so vast, a world wind-blown!” [Bridge] Oft times the earth and sky do meet, A feathered wing, a paddle’d fleet- Bound by mirth and naught by chains, We danced as one ‘bove snowy plains! [Chorus] Wind may call, and rivers run, Feather and fur, we fly as one. Over the pines, through silver spray, Brother, we ride till break of day! Mountains whisper, valleys sigh, Moonlight dances, cold and high. Far we wander, wild and free, A wing, a paddle-come with me! [Outro] So hear ye well, good folk, this song, Of feather and fur, both swift and strong. For strange the paths that friends may weave- And aye, here, there be beavers, believe!
