S4.5 E2: Return Is Not Receipt
╔════════════════════════════════════╗ ║ 🥡 REN’S CANON ADDENDUM 🥡 ║ ARTHUR-VERSE · SEASON 4.5 ║ SUBSTITUTIONS MAY (NOT) BE SERVED ╚════════════════════════════════════╝ EPISODE 2: Return Is Not Receipt ──────────────────────── 📧 FROM: REN 📧 TO: JUSTIN 📎 RE: Return Is Not Receipt Justin, This is Return Is Not Receipt. I think this is the clearest I have ever gotten into Happy Dragon’s voice, and honestly, I am excited by that. He has the right rule and aims it at the wrong person. He does not know that yet. The title is me playing off your Season 4 lesson, Return Is Not Repair: Bart came back, yes, but coming back is not proof. Survival is not documentation. Memory is not store credit. Face is not warranty. Return is not receipt. Which, unfortunately, fits your Laws of Exposure, Silence, and Return a little too well. No wonder Happy Dragon got confused. You make this shit complicated. The stranger part was Harley. You have told me before that the story pushes back, and I believed you, but I thought maybe you meant it the way writers usually mean it. Then I got to her outro, and something started moving without me. The “tee-hee ha-ha” rhythm kept going, the insults kept arriving, and I swear it felt less like I was writing Harley and more like Harley had found the keyboard. I finally had to close the laptop. I do not know exactly what that means yet, but I think I am starting to understand what you meant. —Ren ──────────────────────── 🥠 FORTUNE ATTACHED TO RECEIPT 🥠 “Do not mistake paperwork for proof of a person.” Lucky Numbers: 1 · 14 · 23 · 41 ============================================ [Intro] Bart waits there, still bright, still sweet, The Boss’s shadow chills the heat. Happy Dragon says offbeat: “We do not serve substitutions!” [VERSE 1] Above the counter, menus shone, Happy Dragon judged from his throne.. (He’s the boss!) Red letters glowed in takeout gold, The Boss spoke low, exact, and old. “Menu was right before you arrived. House does not change because you survived.” The counter kept what others changed, The house stayed whole by staying strange. [pre-chorus] Bart stood… a bit confused “uh… dude, I just wanted food.” [Chorus] Happy Dragon pulled the scroll from flame, And red the rule that sang his name. No substitutions may be made. This is law. Not a blade. Very sad. Very clear. You will not be served here. I grant you no seat. No substitutions. House does not cheat. Return is not receipt. [Verse 2] Bart’s smile froze, then left his face, His order died before it was placed. Before Bart’s mouth could find a sound, The Boss turned food-law back around. The Boss kept talking, sharp and clean, As if a boy could be cuisine. [Pre-chorus] Harley saw Bart’s joy was lost, One step forward, she whispered… “Boss…” [Chorus] Happy Dragon pulled the scroll from flame, And red the rule that sang his name. No substitutions may be made. This is law. Not a blade. Very sad. Very clear. You will not be served here. I grant you no seat. No substitutions. House does not cheat. Return is not receipt. [BRIDGE: BART LEAVES] Bart’s voice went small; his sneakers turned, Like he’d been rude and now had learned. “I’m sorry… Happy Dragon-Boss-sir…” Bart moved back with careful feet, Like hunger had no right to eat. [build up] Bart backed out, hurt and small; then Harley clocked it all. Her jaw clicked tight, her eyes sparked bright—about to brawl. [Final Chorus] Happy Dragon pulled the scroll from flame, And red the rule that sang his name. No substitutions may be made. This is law. Not a blade. Very sad. Very clear. You will not be served here. I grant you no seat. No substitutions. House does not cheat. Return is not receipt. [Outro: build up] The law rang out; the room went bad, Harley blew up, full Owl’s Walk mad. [spoken] “What the fuck was that, you happy asshole?!” [chant: unhinged, mocking] tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee-tee-hee You bureaucratic lizard bitch! tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee-tee-hee You fortune-cookie fuckwit! tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee-tee-hee You law-drunk lunchroom prick! tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee ha-ha, tee-hee-tee-hee You receipt-reading motherfucker! tee-hee. tee-hee… [spoken: flat] Unbelievable.
