Funny how a sentence changes When you pull it from its place, Leave behind the conversation, Keep the words that fit your case. I've heard things I supposedly said That I barely recognize— But two came strangely back around, With truth behind the lies. You said I told you I could make it So you'd never see your dad. That wasn't even close to The conversation that we had. What I said was that Mindy should know What pushing me away might do— Your dad won't go places without me, so Push me out, you push him out too. It wasn't a threat. It wasn't a plan. I wasn't controlling Where he'd choose to stand. It wasn't what I said, It wasn't what I meant, But somehow after everything That's right where all this went. I didn't make it happen, I didn't tell him what to do. You got the conversation wrong— But it turned out to be true. Then there was that conversation About a talent that you had: "You've got a problem—everybody Wants the skill you've got so bad." "And I'm one of those people," I added with a smile— Just a lighthearted way of asking You to use your skill for me awhile. Thirty seconds. Just a video. Something you knew how to do. I wasn't actually thinking you had a problem, I was complimenting you. Your talent was in such demand, I joked that I wanted some too— But what I meant as playful asking Apparently sounded like a demand to you. It wasn't what I said, It wasn't what I meant, But somehow after everything That's right where all this went. You really did have a problem, And how you handled it cost you. You got the conversation wrong— But it turned out to be true. That's the part that almost makes me laugh When I look back from today: Two things you heard so differently From anything I meant to say. No, I couldn't make you lose your dad— That choice was never mine. But when you decided I wasn't welcome, He wouldn't leave his wife behind. It became true. But it's all on you. And when I said, "You have a problem," I didn't think you really did. It was just a playful way to ask you For that little video clip. But it turns out you had a problem— One your choices clearly showed. And the way you chose to handle it Cost you more than either of us could've known. It became true— And that one's on you, too. So maybe there's a difference Between prophecy and consequence— Between what somebody actually says And what you choose to hear in it. It wasn't what I said, It wasn't what I meant, But hindsight makes those twisted words Look different in the end. Not because I made them happen, Not because your version was true— You got both conversations wrong... And somehow both came true. You were wrong about what I meant. You just weren't wrong About where we'd end up. And the strangest part is— It wasn't something I made come true. Your choices did that. It wasn't what I meant— But it turned out to be true... Your choices made it true.
