Still Think It Counts

V6

Yeah… Funny how you remember it now. After all this time. You said, “Hold on, I’ll come back around,” like forever was a little town. We were broke, dumb, talking too loud, swearing words still meant something out loud. I kept your jacket by the door, kept one damn light on way too long. Then one day I quit keeping score, and learned how good “gone” can sound. Now you’re standing there like time stood still, like I’m supposed to feel what I used to feel. Baby, nah — that ain’t the deal. You made a promise back when promises had weight. Now you’re knocking on my door like love don’t got an expiry date. You say, “I meant it, ain’t that gotta count somehow?” Yeah, maybe back then, baby — but you still think it counts now. Still think it counts… Damn. That’s cute. You got the same eyes, different coat, same little pause before the joke. You say you changed — yeah, maybe so, but I changed too, thought you should know. I ain’t mad, I ain’t keeping score, ain’t throwing bottles at the wall. I just don’t live there anymore, where one “I swear” could fix it all. You want the boy who waited still. Man, he left when you never did. That’s the part you somehow missed. You made a promise back when promises had weight. Now you’re talking like those words were sitting here just saving your place. You say, “I meant it, ain’t that gotta count somehow?” It counted then, I swear it did — but you still think it counts now. Maybe in another life you came back when you said you would. Maybe I’d still call that love. Maybe words were still that good. But not now. You made a promise when we still believed that stuff. But time don’t owe us nothing, babe, and meaning ain’t enough. You say, “I meant it.” Yeah… I believe you somehow. It counted then. It just don’t count now.
