Everdream

We wrote "forever" on crumbling walls, Dreams too big for our second-hand coats. Nights smelled like rust and stolen time, We yelled out loud, hah, even when it choked. Nothing to lose but the end of the night, Our promises danced in cigarette light. Now it’s ties and tidy little screens, Swapped the storm for daily routines. Where did you go, Everdream? You were wild, you were wrong, you were everything. Now we line up, we clock in, Just shadows where we used to sing. Hmmm... We swore we’d never sell our names, Now we answer when the system calls. Working hard just to stay asleep, Trading hunger for half-priced peace. Hah... The rebels hang their coats by the door, Dead poets don’t write anymore. We scroll instead of scream these days, Flickering out in a thousand ways. Where did you go, Everdream? You were sharp, you were raw, you were never clean. Now we sell our younger skin, For comfort wrapped in dopamine. Hmm-mmm... You remember the rooftop plan? That band that would break the sky? The novel you'd write before you turned 25? What happened to the fire in your eye? You didn’t leave with a bang. You just faded behind the noise. Maybe the saddest kind of death Is the one we choose with poise. Hmmm... yeah... Where did you go, Everdream? Buried deep in the days between. But some nights, when sleep escapes from me, I still feel you in the moonlight. So if you ever find your way, Even worn, even late, I’ll keep the window slightly open. Everdream... You’re not all gone. Hmmm. We wrote "forever"... Hmmm.
