Upstream (Dead Already)

Verse 1 Born in gravel, cold and blind Current's pulling, leave it all behind Smolt skin silver, river to the sea Three years out there, nothing's free Pre-Chorus Salt water teaches you to forget Where you came from, what you don't regret Chorus I'm swimming home to die Fighting up where I was born Body breaking, don't ask why Every leap a little more torn Upstream — dead already Upstream — and I don't care Verse 2 Bears are waiting at the falls Current's roaring, hear it call Hook in jaw or claw in side Doesn't matter — I decide Pre-Chorus Skin turns red, my body's done Spawned the future, lost the sun Chorus I'm swimming home to die Fighting up where I was born Body breaking, don't ask why Every leap a little more torn Upstream — dead already Upstream — and I don't care Bridge (quiet, sparse instrumentation) Eggs in the gravel Same cold water I gave you nothing But the river, and the slaughter Final Chorus (full distortion, screamed) I'm swimming home to die This was always how it ends Body breaking, don't ask why I was never gonna bend Upstream — dead already Upstream — and I don't care Upstream — dead already Born here. Dying here. (Outro: feedback, riverwater sample fading under distorted chord)
