CALL IN SICK

What time is it? Don’t look Your alarm went off at six forty-eight You let it ring across the room Your boss sent three little dots Then, “Are you coming in soon?” You’ve got one sock on Your hair’s still wet Standing in the kitchen Like you lost a bet I slide your phone Face down on the table You look at me like, “You know I’m not able” But the train can leave without you The clock can lose a day Nobody gets a medal For never being late Call in sick Tell them anything Say the train broke down Say you lost your keys Leave your shoes Right where they are We can waste the whole day We don’t have to go far Call in sick Let the phone keep ringing The world will keep moving Without us in it Just for today Just for today We burn the eggs around eleven Eat the good cereal instead You wear my shirt out to the corner With sunglasses on your head The woman downstairs Asks if we’re okay You say, “Never better” In a suspicious way We buy cheap wine And a magazine Sit in the park Where your office can’t see Let the inbox pile up Let somebody complain You’ve been holding your breath Since sometime in May Call in sick Tell them anything Say the pipes burst open Say you couldn’t sleep Leave your shoes Right where they are We can waste the whole day We don’t have to go far Call in sick Let the phone keep ringing The world will keep moving Without us in it No meetings No names No password No train No smiling On cue No asking “How are you?” Tomorrow you can be responsible Tomorrow I’ll get out of your way But tonight we’ll order too much food And forget it’s only Tuesday Maybe nothing here is permanent Maybe that’s what makes it good You put your head against my shoulder Like you finally understood Call in sick Tell them anything Say the day got lost Somewhere in between Leave your shoes Right where they are We already went nowhere And somehow got this far Call in sick Let the phone keep ringing The world kept moving We didn’t miss it Your alarm is set for six forty-eight You turn it off Then change your mind
