The Bell Beneath the Fjord — Ember of Midgard — Nordic Folk Rock
Full English Lyrics [Atmospheric Opening] [Spoken Narration] Long before the village had a name, a king was buried beneath the fjord. His sword went down. His crown went down. And with him, a bell of bronze. The elders said it would remain silent until the village faced its final night. Then, beneath an autumn moon, the bell began to ring. And beyond the eastern hills, enemy torches filled the dark. [Sung Verse] Eira watched them from the shoreline, shield of ashwood by her side. Through the hills, a thousand warriors marched beneath the evening sky. In the hall, the old jarl shouted: “We will guard our fathers’ land!” But Eira saw the sleeping children and the wounded where they lay. [Pre-Chorus] The jarl raised his drinking horn: “We leave no field, we yield no stone!” [Spoken Story Section] The people struck their shields. Eira remained still. Her mother had once told her: “An oath is not a chain. It is a promise to protect something.” Then the bell rang again. Deep beneath the water, it seemed to speak her name. [Chorus] When the bell beneath the fjord is calling, hear the truth below the tide. Walls may fall and fields may vanish, but the living must survive. Carry every soul beside you. Leave no child behind. We are more than halls and timber. We are blood, and breath, and time. Hear the bell! We will carry on! [Spoken Conflict Section] “Open the mountain road,” Eira said. The jarl stared at her. “Our ancestors died upon this ground.” “And did they die,” she answered, “so their children could die here too?” He called her coward. He ordered the guards to take her shield. But the bell shook the longhouse walls. Eira walked toward the fjord. If the living would not listen, she would ask the dead. [Sung Verse] Through the fog she rowed in silence, far beyond the wooden quay. Every stroke became an answer. Every bell led through the sea. She tied a rope around her body, drew one breath beneath the sky, then descended through the darkness where the ancient shadows lie. [Spoken Turning Point] On the floor of the fjord, Eira found the bronze bell. Beside it stood a man wearing a broken crown. “I created the oath,” said the spirit. “I feared my people would abandon me.” “Your oath will destroy them,” Eira replied. The dead king lowered his head. “Then break it. Do not save my kingdom. Save my people.” He touched the bell. The darkness filled with gold. [Bridge] Not every battle needs a grave. Not every hero holds the gate. Sometimes courage leads the living from the hands of certain fate. Let the empty longhouse fall. Let the enemy take the stone. Where our voices stand together, we will build another home. [Spoken Narration] Eira woke upon the shore. The enemy was close. She returned to the hall and placed the king’s bronze ring before the jarl. One mother stood beside her. Then the blacksmith. Then the guards. At last, the old jarl removed his crown. “Open the mountain road,” he said. Before the enemy reached the village, the people were climbing toward the west. [Final Chorus] When the bell beneath the fjord is calling, hear the truth below the tide. Walls may fall and fields may vanish, but the living must survive. Carry every soul beside you. Leave no child behind. We are more than halls and timber. We are blood, and breath, and time. Hear the bell! We will carry on! Though the hall is lost behind us, we will reach the other side. Hear the bell! We will carry on! [Outro Narration] From the mountain, Eira watched the old village burn. The jarl stood beside her. “Did we betray our ancestors?” he asked. Far beneath the fjord, the bell rang one final time. “No,” Eira said. “We finally understood them.” Years later, beyond the mountains, a new longhouse stood. And above its door were carved the words: We carried on.
