The Things That Wait Part 02
### Part II: What Comes After Cards are turning by the flame, Shadows moving without a name. A Giant watches by the door, Then watches shadows evermore. A hand moves left, a shadow bends, He sees a message no one sends. Every flicker becomes a sign, Until the darkness enters his mind. ### Shared Chorus **Round the stone and round the flame, Keep the old and secret name. Hill and hollow, shore and tree, What is hidden, let it be. Do not call and do not stray, Do not answer what calls your name. By moon and mist, by root and bone, Keep the old roads unknown.** By the lake a horse stands still, Beautiful beside the hill. Mount its back and ride away, Never knowing what it may betray. Skin grows tight beneath your hand, The black lake closes over land. Down you go beneath the foam, And only one thing reaches home. Skinless thing beneath the rain, Yellow veins and ancient pain. Breath that sickens field and tree, Debt returned from what must be. Do not call it beast alone, It walks on debts that should be known. What was owed and left unpaid May come wearing flesh and shade. ### Shared Chorus **Round the stone and round the flame, Keep the old and secret name. Hill and hollow, shore and tree, What is hidden, let it be. Do not call and do not stray, Do not answer what calls your name. By moon and mist, by root and bone, Keep the old roads unknown.** Upon the drowned fortress wall, A woman hears the dead ones call. Not tomorrow, not today, But lives that died another way. She mourns the footsteps yet to come, She cries for battles never won. She knows the end before the start, And sings it with a broken heart. A little crawler crosses stone, Dragging strands of hair alone. Three who see it, three who swear Different limbs were crawling there. A tall mistwalker drifts nearby, A cloak beneath the moonlit sky. Guide or servant, friend or foe, No one knows which way it goes. Those who see its face asleep Wake with memories buried deep. They drown their thoughts in drink and say Some faces should remain away. ### Shared Chorus **Round the stone and round the flame, Keep the old and secret name. Hill and hollow, shore and tree, What is hidden, let it be. Do not call and do not stray, Do not answer what calls your name. By moon and mist, by root and bone, Keep the old roads unknown.** A dead king rises from the ground, Stone goes sour where he is found. Alchemy could cheat the grave, But could not make the dead king brave. His bones grow hard, his kingdom cracks, The water turns and won't turn back. He wears a crown beneath the stone, But what returned was not his own. Something sits upon your chest, Something feeds upon your rest. You cannot move, you cannot flee, It whispers things you're not to hear. The more you fear, the more it grows, The more you fight, the less it goes. When you wake, don't speak its words, Some secrets should not leave the dark. Pale faces underneath the sea, Floating where your face should be. Your reflection starts to sing, Calling you to follow in. Mother's voice and lover's voice, Your own voice making its choice. Look away before you hear What the drowned reflection holds near. ### Shared Chorus **Round the stone and round the flame, Keep the old and secret name. Hill and hollow, shore and tree, What is hidden, let it be. Do not call and do not stray, Do not answer what calls your name. By moon and mist, by root and bone, Keep the old roads unknown.** A shell-backed crawler crosses stone, Walking walls as though they're foam. Through the cellar, through the keep, Where solid rock should hold it deep. Four white birds above the lake, Four lost children still awake. Frozen water, human cries, White wings underneath gray skies. A jealous spell, an ancient wrong, Four children carrying grief along. Centuries pass and still they call, Four small voices over all. A ghostly ship through storms of white, Cold fire burning through the night. Ice for timber, shade for crew, Blue lights drifting underneath too. Three bear brothers, three royal claims, Three kingdoms burning underneath their names. They fought until the land was bare, Then found no kingdom waiting there. ### Shared Chorus **Round the stone and round the flame, Keep the old and secret name. Hill and hollow, shore and tree, What is hidden, let it be. Do not call and do not stray, Do not answer what calls your name. By moon and mist, by root and bone, Keep the old roads unknown.** Down below the fourth path bends, Where the dead walk without ends. A skeleton made of light Marches through the Purgatory night. Its armor whispers, debt by debt, Counting what was owed and yet Never paid and never gone, Following the dead path on. But beneath the oldest fear, There is something closer here. Not a claw and not a tooth, Not a beast that hunts for blood. It. Is. The Gray.
