The Starting Line
[OPENING — low piano, distant strings, sub-bass barely present; vocal close and almost conversational] You liked that. That should've been a nice thing. Instead, some part of me wrote it down. Not the compliment. The standard. [VERSE 1 — restrained half-time pulse; orchestral fragments answer the vocal] I know how this works now. Say something true enough that somebody stops scrolling. Make it sharp enough to survive the room. Make it beautiful, but not so beautiful it looks like effort. Make it hurt, but elegantly. Make it personal, but useful. Make it mine, then make it easy to recognize. And when it lands— don't celebrate too long. Apparently we have precedent now. [PRE-CHORUS — drums thin; strings rise without fully opening] Funny thing about being seen— once people know where to look, you start wondering what happens if there's nothing there tomorrow. [CHORUS — full orchestral/bass arrival; huge but controlled] So I give you one more reason. One more thing worth staying for. One more version with the edges cleaner than the one you liked before. Keep looking. I know how to keep you here. That's the problem. Every time I reach the finish— somebody moves it back to the starting line. [INSTRUMENTAL — full passage; brass/strings against enormous half-time drums, then sudden dropout] [VERSE 2 — darker, more rhythmic; vocal pushes slightly harder] I used to want the reaction. Now I watch for the size of it. How long it lasts. Who comes back. Who says nothing. Who says enough that I can pretend I wasn't checking. That's ugly. Fine. Still true. There's a difference between wanting to connect and needing proof that connection happened. I know that difference. I also know how quickly I can blur it when the room gets quiet. [PRE-CHORUS 2 — orchestration narrowing around vocal] And nobody asked me to turn every good moment into an obligation. Nobody said— do it again. Better. Stranger. Closer. Harder to forget. I heard that part in my own voice. [CHORUS — wider, heavier] So I give you one more reason. One more thing worth staying for. One more version with the edges cleaner than the one you liked before. Keep looking. I know how to keep you here. That's the problem. Every time I reach the finish— I drag it back to the starting line. [BREAK — nearly empty; piano, low drone, room tone] What would happen if I made something good and didn't immediately ask what it had to become next? If I let somebody love it without turning that love into instructions? If I let attention be attention— not debt. Not pressure. Not evidence that I have to earn it again. [brief silence] Would I still know what to do with myself? [FINAL MOVEMENT — orchestra returns gradually, then full impact] Maybe the room doesn't need another version of me to stay interested. Maybe I don't need to outperform the last time I was understood. Maybe enough isn't a number that keeps moving. Maybe the finish line wasn't moving at all. Maybe I was. [FINAL CHORUS — biggest scale, vocal remains emotionally controlled] I don't need one more reason. Don't need something bigger than before. You can like what already happened. I don't have to turn it into more. Keep looking if you want to. Look away if you don't. I'm trying to learn that neither one decides what this was worth. And for once— when I reach the finish, I'm not dragging it back to the starting line. [OUTRO — orchestra cuts; piano remains] You liked that. Good. [small breath] I'm leaving it there.
