[Verse 1] Dave opens up Kowabunga Bay Keys on a carabiner Sun in his eyes Coffee cup ring on yesterday’s plans Laugh in his throat like a loaded surprise Lessons at dawn with Dr. Fox Teaching him angles Spin And sand Quiet on the tee But his mind’s on the take He’s drawing blueprints in the back of his hand [Chorus] Back-nine Huey Plays it cool Plays it cruel Back-nine Huey Smiling wide while he breaks every rule We think we’re winning Till he leans on the cart Says “play it out You’ll see” Back-nine Huey And we pay the fee [Verse 2] Scoreboard glow in the clubhouse glass Names stacked neatly in trembling chalk Banker in a blazer counting futures Dave just shrugs Lets the numbers talk Front nine friendly Jokes and beers He’s tossing advice like crumbs (hey!) Turn at the bend and the flag starts to blur That’s when he hums and the trap door comes [Chorus] Back-nine Huey Plays it close Plays it sly Back-nine Huey Soft voice Hard eyes “one more try” We double down He tightens his glove Says “guess it’s meant to be” Back-nine Huey And we pay the fee [Bridge] [Guitars swell Distant Then slam in] He walks that line Between buddy and shark Sunburnt arms But his heart runs dark We shake his hand He’s already gone Counting our cash Whistling that same old song (yeah) [Chorus] Back-nine Huey Plays it cool Plays it cruel Back-nine Huey Smiling wide while he breaks every rule We think we’re winning Till he leans on the cart Says “play it out You’ll see” Back-nine Huey And we pay the fee (every time) Back-nine Huey And we pay the fee
