If It's Hot It's Old

If it’s burning hot inside, it’s not just today
That fire’s from another era, carried this way
Your voice gets loud, but the moment turns small
You feel the heat — it's the past that calls

We snap, we cry, we freeze, we fight
Not always sure what caused the fright
But deep inside, brain and body hold
The weight of wounds from stories old

The amygdala rings that silent bell
Before the thinking brain can tell
Is this now or long ago?
The body shouts out first with, “No!”

A touch, a tone, a careless sound
And suddenly we spin around
Not because of what was said—
But haunts of things we thought were dead

[Chorus]
If it’s hot, it’s old (if it’s hot, it’s old)
It's not about the words you’re told
It's a memory, a pain unfolds
The story left inside, untold

In kitchens, cars, or living rooms
We re-enact our inner wounds
The present moment starts to blur
With echoes from what did occur

They’re not supposed to hurt us now
But ancient scripts still show us how
Our heart recalls what it once “knew”
Even if the facts aren't really true

But wait, the brain can change its aims
It’s not forever stuck in flames
Neuroplastic paths run wide—
Redirecting neurons align

[Chorus]
If it’s hot, it’s old (if it’s hot, it’s old)
It's not about the words you’re told
It's a memory, a pain unfolds
The story left inside, untold

Emotional flashbacks in disguise
Turn present truths into old lies
But naming them can clear the haze
And bring us back to current days

[Chorus]
If it’s hot, it’s old (if it’s hot, it’s old)
It's not about the words you’re told
It's a memory, a pain unfolds
The story left inside, untold

Replace the thought, reframe the pain
Not “What the hell?” or “That’s insane”
But, “Oh, that startled me” can start
A path that soothes a jumpy heart

Be kind, be slow, be brave, be real
You don’t have to always feel
Like this is war—you’re not alone
You’re safe now... breathe... you're coming home

If it’s hot—it’s just the past
Let it rise, then let it pass
This time you get to choose the way
To meet the fire, and still stay
