Eighteen million... Say their names... Say their names... [Verse 1 - The Genocides] Six million names carved into silence A train that ran on time to hell And when the smoke cleared over Europe They said there was nothing left to tell One and a half million Armenians Marched into the desert to die And Turkey still won't speak the word for it A century of looking away from the sky Two million Cambodians in the killing fields Pol Pot's vision of a perfect state They said it never happened, said it was a lie Said the bones in the ground could wait [Pre-Chorus] But the bones don't lie And the names don't fade And the children of the survivors Still carry what was made [Chorus] They say it never happened They say we got it wrong They say the dead are lying They say we don't belong But we were there And we remember Every face, every name, every year They say it never happened But we are still here [Verse 2 - The Transatlantic Slave Trade] Twelve million people torn from their land Packed into the belly of ships Survivors arrived without a name Just cargo to be traded on a list Three hundred years of cotton and chains Of families sold apart at dawn And now they say it wasn't that bad Say we should all just move along The ledgers still exist The auction blocks still stand The wounds run through the generations Like rivers through the land [Pre-Chorus] But the records don't lie And the chains don't fade And the children of the survivors Still carry what was made [Chorus] They say it never happened They say we got it wrong They say the dead are lying They say we don't belong But we were there And we remember Every face, every name, every year They say it never happened But we are still here [Verse 3 - The Gulag] Eighteen million souls passed through the camps In Siberia's endless frozen dark Sentenced for a joke, a word, a letter Or simply for the crime of having heart Stalin's numbers, still debated As if the scale makes it less real As if the mass graves in the permafrost Are something history need not feel They tore the pages from the books They rewrote what the children learned But somewhere in the frozen ground The truth has never stopped to burn [Pre-Chorus] But the permafrost don't lie And the names don't fade And the children of the survivors Still carry what was made [Chorus] They say it never happened They say we got it wrong They say the dead are lying They say we don't belong But we were there And we remember Every face, every name, every year They say it never happened But we are still here [Bridge] This is not politics This is not opinion This is bone and blood and ash This is what erasure costs When we forget what humans do to humans We give permission for it all to come again So we speak the names out loud We teach the children We hold the line between the truth and them [Final Chorus] They say it never happened They say we got it wrong They say the dead are lying They say we don't belong But we were there And we remember Every face, every name, every year They say it never happened But we are still here We are still here We are still here [Outro] [Acoustic guitar alone, fading] Six million... One and a half million... Two million... Twelve million... Eighteen million... Say their names... Say their names... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Heartland Rock witness statement against historical denial. Three verses, three atrocities: the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, and the Cambodian Killing Fields; the Transatlantic Slave Trade; and the Soviet Gulag system. Not a political song — a human one. The chorus is a refusal: we were there, we remember, and no rewriting of history will silence the names of those who were taken. The intro and outro speaks the numbers plainly, because numbers are what denial tries hardest to erase. A note on the numbers: The figures cited are commonly referenced estimates, but the true scale of each atrocity is debated by historians — and in most cases, the real numbers are higher. The 6 million figure for the Holocaust refers specifically to Jewish victims; total Nazi victims number 11-17 million. The 1.5 million for the Armenian Genocide sits within a range of 600,000 to 1.8 million. The 2 million Cambodians represent approximately 25% of the entire population. The 12 million enslaved Africans refers to those who survived the crossing — millions more died before or during transport. The 18 million for the Gulag represents those who passed through the system; direct deaths are estimated at 1.5-1.8 million, with millions more dying from lasting consequences. These numbers are floors, not ceilings. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2026 Ande Records Lyrics by Ande All rights reserved. https://ande-records.se/
