I learned young that walls ain’t warnings They’re just something in the way Some men wait until the road gets easy I was taught to make a way So I don’t pray for lighter burdens Don’t need the world to understand Give me something I can’t get through And watch me prove I FUCKING CAN!!!! Got an old Marine still living in my backbone Telling me get up when I’d rather be left alone Years put miles on the machinery But apparently forgot to kill the fight in me I ain’t chasing rooms full of strangers Never needed noise to know I’m alive Some people see a man sitting in the darkness I see somebody who finally got quiet I learned handshakes sometimes hide knives Smiles don’t mean somebody came as a friend So my circle got smaller with every lesson Funny how peaceful it got in the end Everybody wants a piece Everybody needs a favor I stopped asking who would stay When there was nothing left to take I’m built wrong on purpose At least that’s how it seems Too stubborn for surrender Too awake for pretty dreams I can laugh while it’s burning I can bleed and crack a joke If you tell me I can’t make it That’s about the dumbest fucking thing you could’ve spoke I don’t need the crowd behind me I don’t need the world to change I’ve been comfortable with darkness Long enough to know its name Half my brain writes songs at midnight Other half won’t shut the hell up Taking things that don’t require attention And relentlessly fucking them up I can turn a thought into a project Turn anything to a whole design Spend six hours fixing one small detail That was probably fucking fine One minute I’m staring at existence Trying to figure what the hell it means Next minute somebody blocks a Walmart aisle And destroys my faith in humanity Yeah, patience is a virtue I apparently received the trial Because nothing tests enlightenment Like a shopping cart sideways in the aisle I contain multitudes. Most of them are irritated. I’m built wrong on purpose At least that’s how it seems Too stubborn for surrender Too awake for pretty dreams But underneath the jokes and profanity Under every character and song There’s a reason I keep making something When it’d be easier to just move on Absolute introspect Wasn’t picked because it sounded clean I can stare straight at the uglier parts Without pretending they ain’t part of me Turn frustration into verses Turn isolation into sound Take whatever tried to bury me Build a fucking studio underground Getting older ain’t surrender Scars ain’t evidence you lost Sometimes surviving long enough to laugh Is worth every goddamn cost I don’t need saving I learned how to swim Don’t need somebody To drag me back in Give me the obstacle Give me the doubt I’ve spent my whole damn life FIGURING SHIT OUT!!! I’m built wrong on purpose And I’m good with what that means Still stubborn as a bastard Still allergic to bullshit and schemes I can laugh while it’s burning Make a punchline from the smoke Turn the worst day into something That’ll make another broken bastard choke I don’t need the crowd behind me Don’t need applause to know my name I’ve been comfortable with darkness I just learned to give it shape I made songs from the silence Made jokes out of the scars Built whole worlds when this one Didn’t feel much like ours I’m built wrong on purpose Never needed their machine If belonging means becoming them I’d rather stay the fuck like me
