Wrenches & Whiskey

Well the sun ain’t up but my boots are on the floor, Punchin’ in at the plant through that old steel door, Fluorescent lights hum like a busted tune, And the forklift beeps in the afternoon. Got my toolbox rattlin’ like a freight train rollin’, Grease on my hands and my sleeves all swollen, Conveyors keep jammin’, belts gettin’ worn thin, I curse ‘em like a preacher, then I get ‘em runnin’ again. I’m turnin’ wrenches and I’m sippin’ whiskey, Life’s hard work but it fits me, fits me, Ain’t afraid of rust or a busted chain, I’ll fix your gears in the pourin’ rain. From the warehouse floor to the breakroom table, I keep the lights on and the place stay stable. Seen bearings spin till they smoked right through, Seen a motor burn black ‘cause the load was too true, Hydraulics hiss like a rattlesnake mad, But I’ll bleed ‘em clean ‘cause it’s the best I’ve had. I’m the guy you call when the night shift cries, With the crescent wrench glintin’ in my bloodshot eyes, Chain hoist swingin’ like a church bell loud, I’ll rig it up safe ‘fore the day shift crowd. Yeah, some folks dream of an office chair, But I’m at home in the diesel air, With the clang of steel and the hammer’s song, That’s where my heart’s been all along. Turnin’ wrenches and I’m sippin’ whiskey, Got a busted world but it still turns with me, When the line goes down and the boss gets sore, I’ll bring it back hummin’ like it did before. From the warehouse floor to the breakroom table, I keep the lights on and the place stay stable. Yeah, I’m just a blue-collar maintenance man, With a wrench in my fist and grease on my hand. Yeah, it ain’t the prettiest life I’ve known, But hell — I’ll fix it, and then take it home.
