Priests of Father Earth and Mother Sky

You, who are beings of a two-fold world, perceive the Great Oneness as Goddess and God, as female and male. For so long you have seen the Earth itself, and nature, as female, as Mother. And like a mother, who gives without hesitation, the Earth has given, and you have taken. So too for thousands of years you have seen the sky, the heavens, as male, the domain of God and gods, strict in their laws, severe in their judgements of goodness and worth. But, all that is, is One—both female and male. And in the dance toward balancing your inner selves you must also seek to find the balance in the world outside yourselves. So of Earth, it is time to see it in its maleness, not as abundant giver, but as being with limits. And of sky, the time has come to know it as female, as well, compassionate and loving, embracing of all.

The mysteries of Father Earth and Mother Sky are not the same as the mysteries of Mother Earth and Father Sky. They are not the same, nor are they a reversal, anymore than a woman is a reversal of a man or a man the reversal of a woman. This can be seen on the genetic level. Women carry chromosomes labeled X and X. But men do not carry Y and Y. The mysteries of gender are not about opposition, but about connection. Y reaches out, but what connects is X, is shared femaleness. One of the mysteries that all gay men share is that we have easier access to female energy as well as male. When two men come together in their loving, the two unseen women within them come together also. And this coming together of woman and woman, in man and man, generates an energy that makes the female powerful. The mysteries of Father Earth and Mother Sky are not the same as the mysteries of Mother Earth and Father Sky. Both are needed, both are necessary, both are reflections of the fullness of Earth and Sky as they rise up from Infinite Oneness. When the creator and ruler of the universe is seen as Mother and not Father, all is present in Her embrace. There is no separation between spirit and matter, for She births the universe from Her body. And there is no separation between the world and humanity, between women and men, or between the different patterns of loving. When two men come together in loving to the shrine of Father Earth and Mother Sky they will partake of ancient rites that reflect the eternal nature of who they are as a people, that were celebrated by their forefathers in the days of your ancient temples. Your shared inner female is reflected outward as Mother Sky, and the outer male is honored as the embodied spirit of Father Earth. You celebrate as scouts, as flute players, as shamans and as hunters, who carry the wisdom and power of Father Earth in your loving. Dancing on the body of Earth, radiant in the clear heaven’s light of your cosmic Mother, you embody the love of Oneness, the mysteries of Oneness.

Be Priests of Father Earth and Mother Sky, as gay men have been for ten thousand years. Love the Earth and work to heal it. Know that this work is a part of your gayness. Move freely in the world of plants and trees, finding friends there, comrades, allies. For your energy can be strong as a forest of deeply rooted trees, shimmering in the sunlight, whispering, sheltering, mighty. And remember the ancient/future ways in which God was also known once as the Mother. Feel her power and claim it as your own. Be loving mothers to each other, nurturing and comforting and strong. Let the world that is changing include you with its changers. Own the power to heal and the power to renew.
Feel in your hearts and souls the joy of Mother Sky. Reawaken in yourselves again the form of God-perception that your earliest ancestors met when they reached out in spirit. Feel Goddess again as the balance and completion of what you have known for so long as male. Let these feelings and memories awaken in you, gay priests, who have for so long served her altars without remembering what it was that you were reaching toward. In this remembering is great healing. Inner and outer will come into balance, female and male, living and dying. For the body you know is only one aspect of who you are. The body is holy. The body is the soul’s desire to express itself made manifest. So rejoice in yourself and your beingness. Rejoice in the powers of Infinite Oneness that allowed to rise up from the heart of Itself the great and holy mystery called life.
