(Ancient Chinese)

V5.5

———————— English Translation ———————— Same Road [Short Intro — Evening Rain at a Roadside Inn] Evening rain fills the old road; one lamp burns at a roadside inn. Five travelers enter to escape the wind, each sitting apart, names unspoken. [Verse 1 — The Five Voices Enter One by One] One traveler taps a rhythm on his cup and softly sings half a new phrase. Across the room, another catches its ending; by the window, another adds a note. Beneath the lamp, one more voice rises— suddenly, five voices answer one another. [Pre-Chorus — The Innkeeper Asks] They have not exchanged names or surnames, yet their five voices already fall into harmony. The innkeeper adds charcoal to the fire and asks: “Where are you bound when morning comes?” One says, “Chang’an.” The next says the same. The remaining three exchange a glance and answer together: (Chang’an!) [Chorus] Same road, same road—we are all bound for Chang’an. From a thousand miles apart, tonight beneath one roof. Before knowing one another’s names, our voices already meet; before one voice has faded, all the others answer. Same road, same road—why should we walk alone? When the rain is gone and morning comes, together toward Chang’an. [Verse 2] The rain subsides; the eaves grow quiet, the lamp wick falls beside the stains of wine. They try the earlier song once more, each adding the sound of his own homeland. One voice leaves a little space; the others find their way into it. [Pre-Chorus 2] One begins to fasten his traveling clothes; the other four gather up their bags. Not a word of agreement has been spoken, yet all five are already standing by the door. [Chorus] Same road, same road—we are all bound for Chang’an. From a thousand miles apart, tonight beneath one roof. Before knowing one another’s names, our voices already meet; before one voice has faded, all the others answer. Same road, same road—why should we walk alone? When the rain is gone and morning comes, together toward Chang’an. [Short Instrumental Break — Dizi and pipa answer each other while the five softly hum the first melody] [Final Chorus — All Five Voices Together] Same road, same road—we are all bound for Chang’an. From a thousand miles apart, now we leave through the same door. Five strangers last night; this morning, traveling together. Before one voice has faded, all the others answer. Same road, same road—why should we walk alone? Daylight fills the road; together toward Chang’an. (Chang’an!) [Outro] Chang’an is still far away. The morning wind is clear. Five shadows follow the great road, and all along the way there is singing.
