A dandelion by the fence Had turned from yellow into white. A hundred wishes, light as air, Were waiting for a breath of wind. Someone said, "Now make a wish," As though the moment had been planned. I closed my eyes and thought of one, Then held the flower in my hand. It's funny how we learn these things, The little rituals we keep. We give our wishes to the wind And hope it knows which way to sweep. Make a wish and let it fly, Little seeds against the sky. You can send them on their way, You can't tell them where to stay. Some will fall beside the road, Some will find a place to grow. The wind has never made a promise, But we make a wish and blow. I watched the smallest ones take flight, One settled somewhere in the grass. Another crossed the garden wall, And several disappeared from sight. I thought of all the careful plans That changed before they had begun. The things we never meant to find, The things we lost while chasing one. We try to plan each step ahead, Draw a map of what comes next. But even with the best directions, Life can take another bend. Make a wish and let it fly, Little seeds against the sky. You can send them on their way, You can't tell them where to stay. Some will fall beside the road, Some will find a place to grow. The wind has never made a promise, But we make a wish and blow. Perhaps a wish is not a bargain, Not a message to the stars. Maybe it's a way of noticing What we wanted all along. And somewhere past the garden Where the drifting seeds have gone, A flower might be growing That nobody wished upon. Make a wish and let it fly, Watch the seeds against the sky. Some will land and some will wander, Some will travel out of sight. There's no need to know the ending, No prediction in the breeze. Still, we watch the seeds go floating Wherever they may please. Make a wish and let it go, There are things we'll never know. The wind has never made a promise, And the seeds are free to grow. The empty stem was in my hand, The afternoon was growing late. I hadn't told the wind my wish. I smiled and walked away.
