[Verse 1] By seventy-four the screens had grown From little ghosts to shapes unknown We'd learned to watch the echoes turn To trace the places storms would burn But April came with something more Than any warning we'd seen before One storm became another in line And crossed the borders we drew in our minds [Pre-Chorus] The maps were filling The phones were ringing And every voice was asking then "Where will it go?" "Who needs to know?" "How far ahead can we warn them?" [Chorus] What the echo couldn't tell us Was what was moving underneath We could see the storm approaching But not the wind we couldn't see And the storm did not know county lines It did not stop at any state So the warning had to travel farther Than the place beneath its wake [Verse 2] They traced the hooks across the paper Watching one return after another Calling towns that lay ahead Calling every place the storm might tread But somewhere watching all those storms Another question filled the room What makes one thunderhead keep growing While another fades away too soon? What feeds the fire inside the cloud? What gives the rising air its strength? What lets one storm gather power And carry it for mile after mile? [Pre-Chorus] Was it the warmth? Was it the moisture? Was it the winds that changed above? What hidden pieces fed the storm And gave it everything it needed? [Chorus] What the echo couldn't tell us Was what was moving underneath We could see the storm approaching But not the wind we couldn't see And the storm did not know county lines It did not stop at any state So the warning had to travel farther Than the place beneath its wake [Verse 3] They watched the cells begin to gather Some grew stronger, some fell apart Some found the air that fed their hunger Some lost the fuel that made them start And sometimes storms would join together Growing larger as they moved What was several separate voices Could become one thunderous truth The sky was not a collection Of isolated storms alone There were currents feeding currents And a larger story being shown [Bridge] Maybe this was bigger than a town Bigger than a county on a map Maybe every piece of knowledge Had to find the people down its path A signal seen in one small room Could become another town's warning A lesson learned beneath one storm Could give another place more time And somewhere in that growing question A new kind of science came alive: Not just where the storm was moving, But why it stayed alive. [Final Chorus] What the echo couldn't tell us Would become the question we would chase Not just where the storm was standing But what was happening in its wake What feeds the fire? What makes it grow? What tells it when to weaken and let go? And the storm still knows no county lines No boundary drawn by human hands So we learned to share the warning Across the roads and through the land [Outro] The screen could show us where it was. But now we wanted to know What made it live. And somewhere beyond that paper map Someone was already asking: "What's feeding the storm?"
