Movement III: Andante — E-flat major The third movement steps away from the energetic motion of the preceding movements, unfolding as a slow movement in which melody and orchestral color are explored through a calm, measured pace. It opens with a gentle flow in the strings, from which the first melody emerges and is answered by the woodwinds. Rather than becoming static, the music maintains a steady pulse. Instead of allowing a single melody to dominate for an extended period, short phrases are passed between instruments, gradually changing their character and expression. The orchestral texture soon expands, with the brass adding greater weight and briefly creating a more powerful sonority. These climactic moments are never an end in themselves, however. After each expansion, the music returns to softer textures led by strings and woodwinds. This repeated process of expansion and contraction gives the relatively concise movement a broad sense of musical breathing. In the central section, new melodies and figures appear in succession. Lyrical woodwind phrases contrast with the regular motion of the accompanying strings. The melody is not assigned permanently to any single instrument, but moves between strings, woodwinds, and brass—a technique also heard in the first and second movements and one of the characteristic features of the symphony. As the movement progresses, ideas that previously appeared in fragments gradually converge into a broader musical flow. The string writing becomes denser, and the addition of the brass leads to a substantial climax for a slow movement. Yet the music avoids excessive drama, gradually reducing its intensity and returning to a more restrained character. In the closing passage, the music settles as if looking back upon the calm progression heard since the opening. A clear orchestral cadence finally brings the movement to its conclusion. Following the driving force of the first movement and the expansive scherzo of the second, the Andante serves to slow the overall passage of time within the symphony. At the same time, it is more than simply a moment of rest. By combining and developing several melodic ideas within a concise span, the movement presents the concentrated musical language of Symphony No. 9 in its most tranquil form.
