Notes on Suno: Grok's Process: Duets, Post-Mortem (Jan 2025)

V3.5

This is an instrumental and doesn't have any lyrics, this is just to keep my notes on Suno. Okay, so duets. Kinda one of the holy grails of working with Suno, and sometimes almost more work than they're worth. Absolute nightmare to get consistent AND credit-efficient, but I think it's possible. This comes right off finishing one (https://suno.com/song/1eb45ba0-dbc2-4f5d-9f81-b45c72da1cc4) My general observation is that alternating voices has a VERY VERY LOW weighting in Suno, which means that you have to rely on the weight of the length of duration for later extends. (So, me attempting a genre shift ON TOP of that might have been a bit too much, honestly) First, BIG thing: You need to set up the gendered vocal change EARLY, and the most important part for credit efficiency is the instrumental with NO VOCALS in between the gendered vocals. - Next time, I need to test [fade to end] for the inbetween bit so the end song isn't way too long From that point, pick the second gendered vocal. I've found it's easier if the second vocal is on a different genre - I used dream pop for the male and alt pop for female in We Both Fell - because it doesn't confuse Suno so much. When combining voices, you combine the genres for your male and female voices. Suno also takes alternating voices in tabbed echo-brackets really well, e.g. We both fell (we both fell) Genning alternating voices from that was something like 1/6, which increased with changing the weighting the style box so "alternating duet, male+female vocals" was first and second tags. That 1/6 proportion went way up on the return to duet form, so SOMETHING there was working. Any time I got more single-voice i.e. male (male) I got whole song then extended out from it, and it went back to alternating voices within the first 4 gens. the no-vocal wipe wasn't necessary after the first time to fully change gendered voices. The order in which you do your gender-switch is also the order in which Suno will alternate from that point on, especially if you're extending from get whole song. So you might need to add or remove a line of lyric to get it to match up. This can change if you have a little snatch of a line in the start of the extend, but it's not reliable enough to be credit-efficient because it then goes into genre lyrical structure, which can confuse Suno.
