Night descended over Egypt, Not a wind disturbed the sand. Every door among the Hebrews Bore the mark of God's command. Lamb was taken, Blood was given, On the lintel, on the frame. Eat in haste, Your sandals ready. Before morning You leave this land. Through the streets the lamps were fading, Pharaoh slept behind his walls. From the servant to the ruler, Silence rested over all. Then at midnight Came the judgment. No great thunder. No command. Only darkness Passing over, Moving through The sleeping land. Behind the blood, The firstborn lived. Beyond the blood, The night came in. PASS OVER! Pass over this door! PASS OVER! Let death come here no more! Through the darkness, Through the night, Blood upon the door Shall be the sign! PASS OVER! Until the morning light! Then a cry arose in Egypt, One voice joined by thousands more. From the dungeon to the palace, Death had entered every door. Pharaoh rose And found his firstborn. All his pride Could not restore What his hardened heart had taken. What his kingdom Paid it for. Before the dawn he called for Moses, Called for Aaron through the night: Rise! Take Israel! Leave my kingdom! Take your children! Take your flocks! GO! The people gathered what they carried, Bread unrisen in their hands. After generations bound in Egypt, Israel Left the land. PASS OVER! The night has come and gone! PASS OVER! Before the breaking dawn! Doors are opened! Chains are falling! Hear the feet Across the sand! PASS OVER! Israel leaves The land! No trumpet sounded. No victory song. Only footsteps Before the dawn And Egypt Lay behind them.
