This song is inspired by Christabel, an unfinished poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written between 1797 and 1800 and first published in 1816. For this musical adaptation, I condensed the original poem and retold its story in newly written lyrics. Set in the stillness of a moonlit night, the song follows the young Christabel, who ventures alone into the forest and encounters a mysterious woman named Geraldine beneath an ancient oak. What begins as an act of compassion gradually draws her into a strange realm of dreams, enchantment, and the supernatural. Although Geraldine is never explicitly identified as a vampire, her mysterious and seductive presence can be seen as anticipating the female vampire figures of nineteenth-century Gothic literature, most famously Carmilla in Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 novella. πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™πŸŒ™ [Verse 1] The castle clock has counted twelve tonight, The moon lies veiled beneath a clouded light. I leave the sleeping castle far behind, And seek the ancient oak with prayer in mind. [Pre-Chorus 1] The forest lies in silence, not a breeze, Yet I can hear a moaning through the trees. I round the oak and there, beneath its shade, I find a barefoot, white and jewelled maid. [Chorus 1] O Geraldine, what wandered here tonight? What brought you to this wood in ghostly white? I know not who you are or what you flee, Yet something in your eyes is haunting me. [Verse 2] She tells me mounted strangers took her away, Then left her there alone before the day. We reach the castle in the pale moonlight, She falters at the threshold, drained of might. [Pre-Chorus 2] She cannot cross the threshold on her own, I lift her inβ€”and welcome the unknown. The dying embers wake with sudden light, As Geraldine steps softly through the night. [Chorus 2] O Geraldine, what wandered here tonight? What hides beneath those robes of ghostly white? I brought you safely through the castle door, Yet who you are, I wonder more and more. [Verse 3] Within my chamber, by the taper's gleam, She stands as silent as a shape in dream. She bares her breastβ€”what mystery I see, Is left unspoken, known to her and me. [Pre-Chorus 3] She draws me close and holds me through the night, Her strange embrace has bound my words up tight. I know what I have seen, but cannot tell, For Geraldine has bound me with her spell. [Chorus 3] O Geraldine, what wandered here tonight? What hides beneath your robes of ghostly white? I saw what you revealed, but can't break free, For you have laid your silent spell on me. [Verse 4] The morning bells are ringing through the hall, But daylight brings no freedom with their call. My father trusts the stranger by his side, While I alone can sense what she may hide. [Pre-Chorus 4] I beg my father: send this maid away, But cannot tell him why she must not stay. He trusts her tale and will not hear my plea, For Geraldine is all that he can see. [Final Chorus] O Geraldine, what came to me tonight? What hides beneath those robes of ghostly white? The morning comes, but still you will not go, And what comes next, I may never know.
