The Surveyor's Pencil

## The Surveyor's Pencil **Verse** The elephant knew no border. The rains carried no passport. The traders followed the stars. Only the pencil walked in straight lines. The rivers remembered their courses. The mountains remembered their names. The people remembered their ancestors. The map remembered only ink. **Pre-Chorus** One stroke divided cousins. One stroke joined strangers. One stroke crossed a thousand stories Without hearing a single one. **Chorus** The surveyor's pencil Never heard the drums. It measured every mile, But counted no one home. It split one people in two. It bound old rivals as one. A line upon the paper... A lifetime just begun. **Bridge** The wind still crosses. The birds still fly. The songs still travel From sky to sky. The land remembers pathways No ruler ever found. The heart still knows A home beyond The lines upon the ground.
