So Will You - Part II [Speech]

V6

[Intro | older British male voice, frightened, breath catching, words coming quickly | tense low strings, restless cello] "I'm sorry! I know, I know that's not what you want to hear, but please, just listen to me! I won't ask you to forgive me. I wouldn't dare. But there's something you need to know before you do this!" [Spoken | anxious, hurried explanation, struggling to maintain composure | trembling strings] "I served the king for thirty years. Thirty years following orders, believing I was doing what was right! That night, we were sent to a house on the northern road. A family accused of treason. The orders were explicit. No prisoners. No witnesses." "The man who answered the door, I remember him! He begged me to spare his wife, his children. And I told him everything would be all right. I looked that man in the eyes and lied to him!" [Spoken | guilt breaking through, voice rising with desperation | dissonant piano beneath agitated strings] "You were ten years old! Just a child! I remember your screams, the way you fought when they dragged you away! I've heard those screams in my sleep for twenty years!" "I know what I did! I know they were your family! And I know there's nothing I can say that will ever change that!" [Spoken | pleading urgency, words tumbling over one another] "But listen to me! I've followed your journey. Every name you uncovered, every mile you travelled, every step that brought you closer to me. I knew you were coming, and when I realised how close you'd gotten, I stopped hiding!" "Do you understand? The guards, the doors, this room! I arranged it! I made certain you'd find me because I knew this might be the only chance I'd ever have to tell you the truth!" [Spoken | frightened sincerity, voice beginning to fracture | music draws back beneath the confession] "Please, there's something else. Something I've carried for years, and I don't know how to tell you. God help me, I don't know how!" "Before that terrible night, I had a little girl. She was taken from us when she was very young. Her mother and I searched everywhere! Every village, every road, every rumour of a child who might be ours!" "Her mother never recovered. And I never stopped looking. Not until years after the massacre, when I found a record. A child taken from her home and given to a family on the northern road." [Spoken | stunned grief, desperate to finish | low cello intensifies] "The same family! The very family I'd been ordered to destroy!" "Don't you see?! All those years searching, and she was right there! Standing in front of me that night, screaming, crying, and I didn't recognise her!" "I didn't know! I swear to you, I didn't know!" [Spoken | emotionally overwhelmed, words spilling out] "And when I finally learned the truth, I watched her grow from a distance. I watched her suffer, watched her spend her life hunting the man who took everything from her!" "I wanted to tell her! A thousand times I wanted to tell her! But how could I? How could I stand before her and confess that I was the man who destroyed the only home she'd ever known?" [Spoken | exhausted desperation giving way to painful acceptance | strings gradually soften] "And now you're here. After all these years, you're finally here." "If taking my life will bring you peace, then take it. I won't fight you. I won't run. I knew what would happen when I let you find me." "But before you do, please understand one thing. I would have given my life that night to spare you what happened. I would give it now, a hundred times over, if it meant you could have those years back." [Final confession | voice trembling, deeply personal, barely holding together | music recedes naturally] "I am so proud of the woman you've become. And so terribly ashamed that I had no part in raising her." "All those years I spent searching for you, and you were right in front of me all along." "Please believe me when I say..." "I never stopped loving you." [Voice breaks, almost a whisper] "My daughter." [End | music falls away]
