EIGHT MOUTHS OF THE RIVER - A Song of Susanoo and Yamata no Orochi
[Prologue — whispered, distant] From heaven cast, through rain and ash, the storm-god fell where black reeds clash. A single chopstick rode the crimson stream, and led him north into a weeping dream. [Verse I] By the Hii River, beneath the mountain’s bone, an old man wept, an old wife groaned. Between their hands, the last flame of their line— Kushinada, daughter of the rice-field shrine. “Seven were taken, one in every turning year. The eighth is waiting, and the river knows its fear.” [Pre-Chorus — ritual, restrained] Eight mouths below, eight shadows grow. Eight valleys bend where red waters flow. [Chorus] Yamata no Orochi, wake not from the stone. Eight heads drinking where the cold winds moan. Yamata no Orochi, your hunger wears the land. You swallow daughters, you swallow field and hand. But tonight, the river calls your name— not as a prayer, but as a blade inside the flame. [Verse II] Susanoo answered: “Give her to my vow. Build eight gates of cedar. Fill eight vessels now. Brew the wine of thunder, make it bitter, make it deep. Let the ancient hunger drink itself to sleep.” He touched her brow, and her body became small— a sacred comb of ivory, hidden in his hair’s black fall. [Build — vocal fragments] Eight gates. Eight cups. Eight eyes. Eight throats. Drink. Drink. Drink the night. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep in red. [Chorus] Yamata no Orochi, wake not from the stone. Eight heads drinking where the cold winds moan. Yamata no Orochi, your hunger wears the land. You swallow daughters, you swallow field and hand. [Bridge — darker, sparse] Then the mountain moved. Moss upon its shoulders, cedar in its skin, eight red lantern-eyes burning through the rain. Its belly dragged in blood. Its tongues divided flame. Each head found a vessel. Each vessel knew its name. The serpent drank the heavens. The serpent drank the ground. The serpent drank the silence until no cry was found. [Drop — repeated chant] Drink the thunder. Drink the rain. Drink the memory. Sleep in flame. Drink the thunder. Drink the rain. Eightfold body, one old pain. [Verse III] When the eighth head sank into its golden sleep, the storm-god drew his iron from the silence of the deep. One stroke for the daughters. One stroke for the field. One stroke for the river that had never learned to heal. The Hii ran scarlet, the valleys lost their breath. And every severed shadow remembered what was death. [Final Chorus] Yamata no Orochi, your mouths are closed at last. But under root and water, your hunger still is cast. Yamata no Orochi, the storm has cut your name. Yet every flood remembers, every mountain keeps your flame. From the final tail, where no blade should ever be, a sword of hidden daylight rose from the bleeding sea. [Outro — whispered] Kusanagi. Grass-cutting wind. Kushinada. Rice-field wind. The river remembers. The river remembers. Eight mouths below. Eight mouths below.
