Under the Canopy (songwriter: Russ Mason)

[Verse 1] I long to see the acacia trees And the forest world they share Where rain clouds form above the canopy Out of moisture in the air Their thorns give the acacia ants A place to raise their brood While in return the ants will see the leaves Don't become a caterpillar's food [Verse 2] I long to see the golden toads And the water pools they share In a clouded mountain wilderness Their whole world just one mile square As the rain soaks their embryos Another generation grows While overhead in green, yellow, blue, and red A quetzal bird's beauty glows [Verse 3] Sunlight fades from the forest sky And the evening's insects run While suspended just above a leaf A spider's web is spun It waits in the midnight air To spring its snare once more And tadpole eggs developing their legs Join their parents on the forest floor [Verse 4] I've never seen a lizard race Across a mirror pond But in that pond I've seen a face Still learning what it's done As dawn pierces the canopy It's a menagerie on parade But with the day the forest gives away To the logger's chainsaw blade
